Q: need help with new migraine medication… zomig?
i’ve recently been put on a migraine medication, and i’m supposed to take it suring the aura or the pain phase. I am unfamiliar with migraine medication and wondering if the medication will help with all the other phases of the migraine, or just the pain phase?
The pain of the migraine I can handle for the most part, it’s the postdome or whatever the last phase is that really bothers me… it takes me days to recover from a migraine, and wondering if the Zomig would help with that?
A: Ah, I just posted a question alike! Anyways, my mother takes Zomig and I’ll probably be taking it within a few minutes.
My mother says it helps throughout and it’s quite strong because she switches to Advil most of the time. Zomig helps relieve the pain and the symptoms, so you should be all right for quite a while. Once it wears off, your migraine really shouldn’t be in such a state and afterwards you won’t experience much.
Q: Is it safe to take my migraine medication?
From time to time I get migraines. I’m trying to get pregnant, and I was ovulating last week- so I don’t know if i’m pregnant yet or not- if I get a migraine this week, is it safe to take the medication? I take Zomig- so it’s not a store bought medication. Just wondering if it could effect anything this early if I am pregnant.
A: the safest thing to take is Tylenol… and ONLY as directed… Although tylenol never works for me (it isn’t strong enough) it may help you and it is the safest thing if you are worried about your future baby…
Q: what is the new medication called that they use for migraines? i think its zomig or something but im not sure
A: Zomig is one of the newer medications used for migraines. Imitrex and Maxalt are two others.
They are a class of medications called 5HT receptor agonists which are serotonin receptors.
Q: What is a good migraine medication that is comparable to Topamax, without the side effects?
I had been taking Topamax for migraines. I was on 400mg a day and it helped really well, but recently found I have a kidney stone due to using Topamax so I am trying to find a different med. I can take for it. For those of you that don’t know, Topamax is used to prevent migraines, not to help with the pain. If anyone has personal experience I would prefer your answer. I don’t want answers like imitrex, maxalt, zomig, as these are to treat the pain after you have gotten a migraine. I want an answer for a med to prevent the migraines. Thanks in advance.

Q: Does anyone suffer from migraine headaches? I’m in my late 50’s and get 3 to 4 migraines a week.?
I never had migraines until my 40’s and they’re getting worse all the time. I’ve been to the neurologist several times and had my last x-rays and MRI last november, so I know there’s no tumors or observable physical problems.
I’ve screened for food allergies and am on a healthy diet. I take a fairly new medication call Zomig, and it’s great. But it seems I need it every other day.
Anyone been through anything similar, or have any info to share?
A: I have been suffering with migraines for about 15 years now. I have tried lots of medicines like Imitrex & while it works for the headache it has lots of other side effects. I have been taking Relpax for the past year & have had better results with it. I also have done a little research on natural remedies & have began taking B12, Feverfew & Magnesium supplements every morning (I get them from my local Whole Foods store). While they are not gone completely they have helped tremendously. I was getting headaches 3-4 days a week & now I am down to about 3-4 days a month. Hope this helps.
Q: i have a medical condition known as chronic tension headache, so why did my doctor prescribe something called?
zomig? zomig is for migraines. ive had medications changed for the past couple of years, what is zomig gonna do or supposedly is more special than other medication? can anyone please say why. thanks.
A: You should really ask your doctor for his/her reasoning for prescribing that medication over your older medications.
Q: Zomig ZMT 2.5 mg dissolvable tablets – How much is the limit within a 30-day period?
I was prescribed Zomig ZMT 2.5 mg (Zolmitriptan) by my Neurologist (along with other medications) to see if maybe they can relieve my migraines. The other two prescriptions she gave me are useless. The one does nothing. And the other is actually an anti-depressant that should help me stay asleep and wake without a headache, but just makes me tired the entire next day.
This seems to be the only medicine that somewhat helps. It takes a while, but it helps. But this is what the website says about how many I can take in a month: “The safety of treating an average of more than three headaches in a 30-day period has not been established.” It doesn’t say anything else. And my Neurologist provided me with a refill that ables me to take 12 a month without going over my prescription. So how do I know how many I can take in a month without over doing it? I’m already on several other medicines, 3 of which I have gotten after I saw her, so she doesn’t know about them. Currently I am on 5 valid prescriptions, 1 I take every day, 1 I take basically everyday but it does nothing, 1 I don’t take anymore because it makes me too sleepy for work, Zomig I am taking not so often but need it more, and 1 that I will run out of by this Thursday. The other 2 she didn’t know about ended already.
So I don’t know how much of the Zomig I can take. So far today I have taken a pain medication that ends Thursday, for something that the Dentist messed up my teeth and put me in excruitiating pain, 1 of the 50 mg pill that doesn’t do anything for my headaches, and I just took 1 Zomig, my 5th one within about a 25 day period. Right now I feel very hot. I have my fan on at work and my body is freezing but my head is burning, I feel very dizzy, I might puke, my head is killing me it feels like someone is drilling in it and squeezing it between two cinder blocks, terrible neck pain, and all that fun stuff. This was going on before I took the Zomig, though. So I don’t think it’s related to Zomig.
I just want to know how much is the limit per month for Zomig. Does anyone know?
A: There are no limits on the number of pills you can get per month. Your insurance might limit the number they will pay for.
The issue with the triptans is that they aren’t super effective. In the best circumstances, they work 80% of the time.
5 Zomigs a month is quite a lot. My guess is that you are also on amitriptyline and/or topiramate. Those are the best preventative drugs for migraines, currently.
Q: Does Zomig affect my birth control pills?
I have migraines about every 2 weeks and I’m always scared to mix my medication since I’m also on the daily birth control pill. Are the chances of the pill less effective then because of Zomig? I tried to do research on it but all I could find was “Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking oral contraceptives (birth control pills), cimetidine, or other migraine medicines. ” on drugs.com.
Otherelse than the birth control and Zomig, there are no other drugs that I take and there are no blood-related problems that run in my family that I know of.
A: Zomig should not affect the effectiveness of birth control pills, in theory. Zomig just mimics the effects of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in your brain. Birth control pills mainly control hormones, independent of serotonin.
Both Zomig and birth control pills have however been associated with blood clots. If you do need to take them both you should ensure you do exercise and do not remain completely still or confined to a seat for any long period of time. This will decrease the chance of blood pooling and hence clotting.
You should probably check with your doctor about the blood clot issue, even if you have no family history.
Q: what is a natural or eastern medicine for chronic tension headache? does anyone know? the only reason why?
i’m asking is because everytime that a conventional prescription type medication is given to me by my doctor it kind of eventually stops working. i was prescribed zomig but it is extremely expensive. can a natural cure or eastern medicine which would be the opposite of western medicine be more beneficial or effective? zomig costs like 356 dollars at walmart. what about sonic pain gel? can anyone please help me? rsvp. thank you.

Q: Strong medication for migraines?
I suffer from chronic migraines, but haven’t really gotten anything prescribed to me because my mother has migraines as well. Somehow, she doesn’t care if I have them or not. Anyways, I’ve been swallowing all different types of Advil over the past few days (Liqui-Gels, Extra Strength, regular…etc) and nothing has worked.
I have to be able to play tennis in about an hour and a half. I play in an academy, so we have to be alert, focused, and aggressive.
I’m wondering if zolmitriptan (Zomig) works because I have it in my house. Also, can you mix it with energy drinks because I got barely any sleep last night?
Thanks.
A: DO NOT take Zomig unless it was prescribed for you. Zomig is a triptan. They are known to have different effects on different people. Even though I am healthy with NO heart problems triptan stopped my heart. If I hadn’t been in the emergency room when they gave it too me I would be dead!
You need to be seen by a good doctor for your migraines. Your mom obviously gets help or there would not be Zomig in your house. Insist that you see a doctor soon! The only thing I can suggest now is to drink a coke. The coke syrup may help with any nausea that often comes with a migraine and the caffeine will help the other pills, ibuprofen etc. work better.
Good Luck.

I have the nasal spay kind.
A: Zomig works for some people, I had it in the nose spray form….eww….it’s horrible and I don’t recommend it. I can’t remember trying it in a pill form. They have whats called MaxAlt. It’s a melt away tablet and it usually works in a half hour. I personally think the imitrex shots work the best, or at least they do for me. I’ve tried it in a pill form and that didn’t work and I also have tried the nose spray of it too, it’s Absolutely discusting when it’s running down the back of your throat, I mean come on your already sick to your stomach with the migraine nyway, ya know. For bad headaches (before i break out the shot) I take 3 ex strength excedrin and 2 ex strength tylenol…you can take it with a pop a lot of the time caffeine helps….then lay down for a half hour. If that doesn’t work you need something stronger. With the excedrin and tylenol, you can’t wait till you have a full blown out mmigraine take it when you start to get a headache. Good Luck!!
Q: Cluster Migranes – has anyone tried accupuncture?
My son in his late 20’s spasmodically gets periods where he will have half a dozen or so really vicious Cluster Migraine’s in a week. Various medications have been tried by his Doctor including Zomig wafers and Immiject {Sprung loaded syringe with one time medication capsule unit. Zomig works, but takes quite a while and after his first try with Immiject (where he accidentally injected straight into the thigh muscle and the injection hurt more than the migraine} he wont use them again.
One or two people have said that acupuncture works as an effective preventative. But the people who said that are not sufferers themselves so it is hearsay. Has anyone who suffers from Cluster Migraine’s tried acupuncture and if so, with what result?
A: Many types of migranes can be helped with this simple herb, Feverfew
Feverfew http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium; syn. Chrysanthemum parthenium (L.) Pers., Pyrethrum parthenium Sm.) is a traditional medicinal herb which is found in many old gardens, and is also occasionally grown for ornament. The plant grows into a small bush up to around 46 cm (18 in) high, with citrus-scented leaves and is covered by flowers reminiscent of daisies. It spreads rapidly, and they will cover a wide area after a few years. It is also commonly seen in the literature by its synonyms, Chrysanthemum parthenium (L.) Bernh. and Pyrethrum parthenium (L.) Sm.
Feverfew was native to Eurasia; specifically the Balkan Peninsula, Anatolia and the Caucasus, but cultivation has spread it around the world and it is now also found in Europe, the Mediterranean, North America and Chile.[1]
Uses
The word “feverfew” derives from the Latin febrifugia, meaning “fever reducer.”[2] It has been used for reducing fever, for treating headaches, arthritis and digestive problems.[3] It is hypothesized that by inhibiting the release of serotonin and prostaglandins, both of which are believed to aid the onset of migraines, feverfew limits the inflammation of blood vessels in the head.[4] This would, in theory, stop the blood vessel spasm which is believed to contribute to headaches. Feverfew may also have GABAergic effects. The active ingredients in feverfew include parthenolide and tanetin. Capsules or tablets of feverfew generally contain at least 205 mcg. parthenolide; however, it might take four to six weeks before they become effective, and feverfew is not a remedy for acute migraine attacks. Parthenolide has also been found in 2005 to induce cell death in leukemia cancer stem cells.[5] Recently[when?], feverfew has been used by Aveeno skincare brand to calm red and irritated skin.
Adverse effects include: gastrointestinal distress, mouth ulcers, and antiplatelet actions.
If feverfew is taken for any length of time as a medicinal herb, sudden discontinuation can result in a withdrawal syndrome consisting of headache, irritability, trouble sleeping and joint pain. As with any other medicinal herb, consult with a knowledgeable practitioner before beginning treatment with this herb.
It is contraindicated in pregnancy.[6]
Evidence that it prevents migraine is limited, but present and definitive.

Q: Help with daily headaches please.?
It seems that on a regular basis I suffer from some sort of head pain. I have been recently medically discharged by the military because these head pains stopped me from pulling my weight. In the summer of 2008 when I was based in little rock ar, they were at their worst. It was definitely cluster headaches. I’ve been to 2 neurologists, I’ve had 4 mri’s, ekg’s, eeg’s and I’ve been on every possible medication otc and zomig, maxalt etc. I’ve been to the dentist and the eye doctor and everything went well. So I was meb and medically discharged in may of 2009.
Since being home (around dc) I have not experienced that kind of pain yet, thank God. However, the past few days I’ve had this lingering head pain that I cannot kick. I don’t waste my time with otc for fear of rebounds and I’ve cut my caffeine intake in half. When I think about it, during this whole summer I was scot free of all the head pains so why are they back now? My diet isn’t great but I’m in awesome shape and I drink water regularly. Well now I am trying to reelist into the military and they say that I can as long as I have a clean bill of health. Which involves me going to another neurologist and passing the exam… But my little rock neurologist never found anything wrong with my brain in the first place.
So obviously I can get the clean bill of health but I need to know if others have this weird pain and what they do to deal? It’s not an aching pain just a dull one. You know its there but you can still go on with your life.
In early 2008, I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed. Starting June of 2008 is when these terrible pains started. I never had dry sockets or any complications but could this be it?
(before I had my wisdom teeth removed I had a natural headache every 3 months or so)
I’ve read alot about sinus headaches? My nose seems fine and I’m not aware of any allergies. However, when I have a headache my nose does seem stuffy.
Also, During my worst headaches my back lower left molar aches extensively. But, It’s not localized my Left frontal lobe hurts as well… but I wonder why my tooth gets achy.
With zero medications that work, Military doctors fail to find an issue and this headache coming and going into remission when it feels like it, what the hell is wrong?
Most people don’t understand what a cluster headache feels like so when I’m at work fixing planes and I get a headache their response is suck it up and work. I need to fix this issue to continue making money or else I will eventually get fired.
Anyway any help is appreciated!!!
A: Have you seen an ENT? I have diseases of the sinuses which means I, too, have headaches daily and I take a sleeping pill so I can get to sleep and I wake up with a headache everyday so I know what you are going through. Try an ENT and maybe a CT scan. I am allergic to all prescription pain relievers so I use ice. every hour wrap an ice pack in a pillow case and put it on your head for 20 minutes of every hour. Mine goes away after just one ice pack treatment. I’ve been to Neurologists also. Try the ice.
Q: Anyone who suffers from migraines?
i have been suffering from migraines for 15 years now and i was wondering if anyone knows of a good natural way to either prevent them or make them go away once you get them? I am on medication, i take Topamax daily 100mg and Zomig whenever i get an attack, but these medications have very serious side effects. The Zomig makes me fall asleep and it makes me real tired, i cant function after taking this medication, and then the Topamax makes me very cranky, mood swings and heartburn. I do not like these side effects, would much rather take care of the migraines in another way. Anyone who can give me any info is very appreciated. Thanks
i have 3 kids and its hard when i get a migraine because i wish i could just lay down to try and get rid of it but i still have to take care of my kids so i cant just lay down but then again if i take the zomig it just makes so tired so i just dont know what to do anymore, i have tried the coffee and there are times that it helps but not always and also the excedrin it doesnt help unless i take it right away, but im so tired of taking all these meds
A: i get them too, but my dr says their “hormonal” so she wouldnt perscribe anything for me. of course my issue is that my estrogen is low so my hormones get out of wack so i never know when one is going to hit (like most hormonal-caused migraine suffering women get them around their cycle). anywho…
some things that have helped me a little. if i start to feel one (even if its just a headache and not a migraine i do this just to be safe): i eat something with protein (a bagel w/ creamcheese, some string cheese, deli meat), have a little caffiene (i’m a diet coke drinker, but about 1/2 cup of regular coke seems to work best for me), and a big glass of water. sometimes it will stop it before it hits, or at least just turn it into a regular headache.
if you can, get away from florescent lighting (they seem to be worse for me) and if you can stand it, get into natural light. if you’re already to the photosensitive stage, get into complete darkness.
now if its already hit, i swear by excedrine migraine. if it isnt full blown but you know its on its way, 1 usually kills it. if its full blown 2 works (it can knock me out, but usually i just have the fuzzy face feeling).
thats all the advice i can give you. honestly if i get them i’d rather just curl up in bed with the curtins closed and the blanket over my head, at least this way no one will bother me, and it makes my fiance take care of our dogs for a while. but i know thats not always a viable option.
Q: Migraine Sufferer?
My migraines have got steadily worse over the past year so doctor has prescribed Zomig tablets. Has anyone had any side effects from taking this medication?
A: I switched to zomig from sumatriptan (imitrex/imigran) because the side effects of that were horrific. Huge blood pressure changes, I couldn’t take more than a few steps without getting out of breath. Felt like my muscles had been replaced with lead. Extreme fatigue.
Zomig was much, much better, though some of the above were there in small degrees. If zomig isn’t suitable either, naramig is even newer (though still nearly 10 years old) and apparently very well tolerated.
From wikipedia (it’s not letting me post the link)
Reported minor adverse reactions include: hypesthesia, paresthesia (all types), warm and cold sensations, chest pain, throat and jaw tightness, dry mouth, dyspepsia, dysphagia, nausea, somnolence, vertigo, asthenia, myalgia, myasthenia and sweating.
They should all be rare or mild. Anything significant warrants a talk with a GP or pharmacist.
