Q: Does anyone take sumatriptan 50mg tablets to take away migraine?
if so how many do you take until you migraine is gone?

A: HI – I USED TO BUT THEY DID NOT WORK! THE DOCTOR GAVE ME AMITRIPYLINE OR SOMETHING – TAKE THEM EVERYDAY AND KEEPS MIGRAINES AWAY! REALLY OOD, OR MIGRALEVE WORKS BETER – CAN GET HEM ON PRESCRIPTION TOO

Q: Apart from Sumatriptan, what other migraine tablets can i speak to my doctor about?
Sumatriptan are causing me to have horrible side effects like chest pains and backache, is there any other migraine pills i can talk to the doctor about,

A: Stop taking them right away. It is important to treat migraine – please see your doctor ASAP. Your doctor knows your history and knows what medications are out there. There are many options.

Start paying attention to when you have headaches – how long they last, what time of day and day of the week they occur, what precipitated them, etc. Come up with a rating scale for yourself. Note if you have nausea and vomiting.

I have my headache patients get a calendar just for tracking headache. Are you waking up with a headache? Does it come on in the afternoon? Note everything.

Skipping meals and having irregular sleep habits are the most common triggers. Some people are triggered by certain foods, but much more is made of this than we actually find. I’ve had patients cut out aged cheese, tomatoes, and all sorts of foods – including gluten – to NO effect. I’ve never had one patient benefit from dietary changes, so I wouldn’t expect diet to have an effect, but you could try it. The most important thing is eat regularly and do eat a healthy diet.

I suffer from migraines; they are sheer hell. I carry caffeine tablets with me at all times and I’ll take one as soon as I get an inkling of a migraine. Of course, one can be triggered by caffeine withdrawal. But caffeine is the absolute safest thing you can take. Excedrin also works well – there’s a lot of research about this, but it’s most likely just the caffeine in the Excedrin. If you want to try Excedrin, buy the generic. It’s the same exact thing.

Migraine should be treated and monitored by a doctor. I see a neurologist. It’s important, as migraineurs have higher rates of stroke. I do NOT want to have a stroke because of a headache! So do see your doctor.

Sumatriptan is great stuff – I use it. But there are other triptan meds and other classes of medication. My father is on Fiorinal with Codeine because he has a coronary stent – he cannot take sumatriptan.

Make sure you have a regular sleep schedule – sorry about that. You can’t stay up super late on some nights and sleep in late to make up your sleep if you get too many migraines. There are medications you can take for migraine prophylaxis – prevention. If you get too many migraines, your doctor might want to try you on one of those. And if you have cluster migraine, you might end up with an oxygen tank. Nope – not a joke. Breathing oxygen can knock down a cluster migraine.

Good luck! Please don’t take any sumatriptan at all if you are having chest pains. See your doctor ASAP. Migraines are horrible. But you can live with them – I made it through medical school and my residency with them. You can find the things that work for you. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Q: do sumatriptan tablets take away your migraines?
hi have been taking these tablets for the last couple of months for migraines. But they sometimes work and sometimes do not. I was wondering if this is normal or are they supposed to take migraines away straight away? Also, how long do your migraines last even after taking these tabs because mine can last up to 3 days. The tabs relieve my migraines but still leave me with a bad headache. I am almost 16 and on the internet and the leaflet inside the tabs say do not take if under 18 do you think this has any affect?

It would be helpful if you could answer if you take these tabs. Thanks
i also take propranolol twice everyday for prevention.
my doctor did issue me with them

A: They do help, they are aka as imitrea. However you are also suppose to only take one ever 24 hours because the risk of stroke. You need to get something else to take also. I take a prevention medication called topamax because i have them everyday.

Q: sumatriptan overdose?
i took 5 sumatriptan (imigran) tablets and four paracetamol.. should i go have my stomach pumped or checked out? i feel sleepy and my stomach hurts. please help
oh yeah the sumatriptan was 50mg and i took 250mg in total, im not sure about the paracetamol, i took 4 in total but im really not sure of the grams

A: Definitely get checked out if you feel different from normal.

But you haven’t provided the doses of your medication. Was your sumatriptan 50mg? Or 100mg? According to the British National Formulary (BNF), you shouldn’t take more than 300mg in 24 hours. What about your paracetamol? Was that 500mg? You shouldn’t take more than 4g of paracatemol daily and it is recommended you take no more than 1g at a time allowing at least 4 hours between doses.

Q: A Question about migraine, and imigran tablets?
Dears,

I have migraine since 10 years, I have discovered tablets called imigan, those tablets contain Sumatriptan succinate as an active ingredient, would you please tell me is it good? becasue I get really comforted when I take it and the pain is reliefed, but a doctor told me that these tablets cause heart attack! any advices please

A: They’re ok. It depends on your own risk factor. Your doctor can determine that based on your age, medical history, etc.

Ask your doctor to do blood work. I had migraines for close to 15 years and finally switched to a different neurologist. He did blood work and found that I was low on iron. I’m now on a daily iron supplement together vitamin C to help absorption. This regimen has decreased my migraine frequency from 3 a week to none at all. I am migraine free for 7 months now which is totally amazing.

Taking a vitamin as a preventative is better than taking an emergency triptan drug.

Q: What medication for migraines helps you the most? Or what do you do when they attack that is effective?
My doctor prescribed me IMITREX tablets and nasal spray before but they don’t help me at all. The nasal spray made matters even WORSE because of the bitter taste that I kept getting after using it. The liquid in the spay kept running to my throat, so I stopped using it because the discomfort made my migraines even more intense. The tablets didn’t do anything but made my head feel empty and heavy at the same time (does that make sense?), and I felt a little weird in my chest after using them. So I didn’t bother to get a refill — I don’t want to risk having side effects for nothing (literally).

I’m 20 years old (male), and have been having migraines since I was about 7 years old (1st grade). I have auras (lightnings) in my eyes which grow so huge I barely can see anything at times. I also feel dizzy which makes me extremely nauseous. The horrible pain happens right after the aura forms a huge lightning circle around my eye that goes away right behind it on either left or right side (it switches). The intense pain in my head starts to fade away after an average of 4 to 6 hours, or right after I vomit. Then my head starts to feel refreshed with a slight tension in my upper spine area, which itensifies when I bend or lift things.

Any advice on how you treat YOUR migraines? Any medications that you know of that are MORE effective than IMITREX (Sumatriptan).

Thanks in advance for you help!
Migraines suck! =[

A: Migraines for men really do suck. I’m sure you know that you should try to sleep in a dark, quiet room. You need to see a doctor who specializes in migraines. You could call a pharmacist. They are so smart, kind, and helpful.
But the best thing to do would be to see a psychiatrist. They go to school for an extra 4 years and when it comes to meds, they know things that no other doctor would come up with. Please trust me on this one. Bless you and good luck. Lynn :)

Q: Side-effects of IMIGRAN / SUMATRIPTAN?
I’m taking Imigran (Sumatriptan) for my migraines, but I can’t seem to get an appointment with my doctor to ask him this. He told me to take Imigran when I feel a migraine coming on, but it’s currently happening about 6 times a week, so I’m taking about 300mg per week.

I need to know if there are any long-term side-effects I should know about. I’ve tried to Google this, but nothing seems to come up, so wondered if anyone here had taken it, or had medical knowledge.

Obviously I try to avoid taking them where possible, but without any other medication, there’s nothing else that works, so it’s either take the tablet or take 4 days off work sick with migraine :(

Before you ask, we’ve looked into everything, and so far this is theh only thing that works. Paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen, natural remedies, and change of diet don’t do anything to help.

A: Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

Sensation of tightness, pressure, tingling, heaviness, heat or pain in any part of the body, including the chest and throat (see warning above).

Dizziness.

Drowsiness.

Flushing.

Increase in blood pressure.

Weakness.

Fatigue.

Nausea and vomiting (though these may also be due to the migraine).

Visual disturbances (though these may also be due to the migraine).

Increased or decreased heart rate (tachycardia or bradycardia).

Awareness of your heart beat (palpitations).

Alteration in results of liver function tests.

Tremor.

Seizures.

Narrowing of the blood vessels in the hands leading to periods of white, painful hands (Raynaud’s phenomenom).

Stiff neck.

Q: Migraine…….?
I’ve had migraines every couple of months for about two years. I went to the doctor and he gave me some ’sumatriptan’ tablets, which are ok, but I was wondering if there is anything else you can do to ease migraine pain. I probably shouldn’t take any other drugs along with the sumatriptan.

I use 4head for minor headaches but it just doesn’t touch migraines! Please help!

A: You can take other drugs along with the triptan. I don’t know what dosage you’re taking, but you can take a 100mg tablet then repeat in an hour if it’s not working. I do the imitrex self injector and is much more effective than the pills. Other than triptans, I take a medicine called Indocin, which is a suppository (I know, yuck) that really works. I take an Indocin and a phenergan (I get nausea), then repeat the indocin in an hour. If that still doesn’t do it, I do an Imitrex shot. If that doesn’t work, I take an oxycodone and sleep it off. You may just try another triptan (Zomig, Maxalt, etc) and see if that works better.

Q: Is what I experience with migraines normal?
I have been having migraines for the past two years and I have noticed that my migraines come whenever i watch a movie the gets me nervouse or anxiouse to know what is going to happen next. Also when I participate in activities that get me all worked up. Why is this? I also noticed that they happen more often around the time that I get my period, which i heard that it is common. But I have never heard about my situation. Should I be taking a different medication. They recently prescribed me Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets. They do the job but sometimes i feel tightning in the throat. is this normal?

A: Migranes effect everyone differentally. A site I found may help you get over them though and I hope it does because I have heard migraines are very painful.

Q: Help… My migraines seem to be taking over my life!?
I have been suffering from migraines for at least 2 years (ever since I took an overdose of my mums heart tablets, but I prefer not to go into that matter), I am on 100mg of Sumatriptan and I tend to faint allot and get dizzy, but now I have been suffering from numbness of the right side of my body and my tongue. I have been going to the hospital since it had started and they have told me it is migraines but are looking into the numbness, do you know anything about this, so I could prevent this.

I am only allowed to take the Sumatriptan (Nasal spray) every 24hours.

A: What milligram of Sumatriptan are you taking (it usually comes in 5mg, 10mg or 20mg)? Sumatriptan has a maximum dosage of 40mg in a 24 hour period. If the first dose is not effective the nasal spray can be repeated after 2 hours to reach the maximum dose of 40mg. The numbness on your right side is a concern. Has the hospital ER done a MRI to make sure there isn’t something else going on that is causing this numbness? If you notice any facial drooping or are unable to use that side of your body go back to the ER. Make sure you take the Imitrex as soon as you notice ANY signs of symptoms of a migraine. Some people notice an aura before the actual migraine begins. Write down everything you can remember that happens right before the migraines occur, that way maybe you can trace down a trigger. Good Luck and be persistent. If you haven’t reached the maximum dose of your medication, call your doctor and ask for a re-evaluation of the treatment and ask for further testing to determine the cause of this numbness!

Q: Servere Headaches all the time?
I’ve had enough now and no-one seems to be helping! I suffer from alot of headaches, and what ever pain killers I take it don’t work, not even the tablet that the doc put me on sumatriptan and topamax, and I darnt even go back yet to tell her its not working because she must think Im a right pain in the ass… I’ve been to see two neurologist, the first neurologist did a mri scan on my brain and said everything was okay, that i had two white dots on my brain, but since I was born premature he said it unsignificant could be down to that it might be scarring and that he aint going to look into it as he thinks its nothing wrong…. but something clicked just recently I had a mri scan two years ago when my headaches first started because i fell down the stairs and they said that my scans where clear and showed me my scans there was nothing on there what so ever… both neurologist one was someone who worked for him… said that it is down to having really bad migrains… which I explained this to the doctor a 4 days ago and she passed it off saying well try the medication first it will work the first tablet you take !!! yeah right!!!

But what I want to know is there anything to control a headache that is ever single day and is now affecting my sleep, the tables that the doc put me on not working, with theses headaches I am constantly tired, i am being sick in the morning and at night i have really bad dizziness, and i tend to be falling over and bumping into things near enough all the time…. this to me does not sound like something to do with migrains as painkillers are not working at all…. though the last neurologist told me to take asperin… untill reasently it seemed to be helping to some what extent, taking my sickness away, and somewhat dizziness and the falling over but not the headaches just the sharpness. leaving the pressure and heavyness… I just need some advice and some ideas how to approch the heath sevice over this because I dont want to look a prat being concerned about my own health and dont want to find out that i’ve got something wrong with me and they messed around to long that its too late…
Thanks for the comments…

Ya thats what the last nurologist thought it could be down to allergies and told me to find out what my trigger connection is, and was told to cut anything out with caffine, sodium benozate and aspertame, and trial and error of your own foods nothing seems to be giving way :S, I also drink plenty of water as im always thirsty, so I make sure I’m drinking plenty. I was also told not to take co-codamol this can increase the headaches :S … But man I wish I could have one day pain free of everything lol, as ive had them for two years and they have gotten worse and to everyday since october grrrrr!!! but ahhh well lol…

A: I only had to read your first paragraph to know what is wrong with you and you can keep going to the doctors and they will never get it right. I’ve had some of the same problem pains all the times and being told there wasn’t anything there. I had to figure it out. Not even my chiro knew what was going on and that surprised me more. But your accident is what caused them and it’s the muscles in your neck that need help. I just came home a week ago from visiting our grandkids and one said he had fallen down and now his head hurt. I took a feel at his neck and he told me when and where it hurt and in less than 5 minutes it was gone. Write me.
