Q: What can I do for my daughter? She has been give two medications for migraines and neither are working.?
Should I ask her doctor to refer her to a specialist or just try a different medication altogether. I don’t know if this will help but she is almost 18 and her medicines are Naproxin and Sumatriptan.

A: Well, first I’d ask for REAL migraine medicine. Maxalt, Imitrex…anything.
I want to give you some bad news first, my entire family suffers from migraine headaches & my sister and I have found no relief. My mother can take something after she gets one but it still takes an hour to work. It’s a tough life having mirgraines.

I am 20 and I have had them since I was 4. I probably should see a specialist but since they run in the family I’m not too worried. It’s all a matter of finding out what causes the onset of her migraines. For me: not eating, not getting enough caffeine for the day, smells, bright lights. Those all can set one off. They have preventative medication but you’ll soon learn that this area is severely under researched and a migraine is still a mystery to doctors.

Besides finding triggers and trying medications, just learn how to handle them. If she feels one coming on, remove whatever could be causing it (bright lights, maybe a candle). Take something asap. Try to NOT take Ibuprofen because it landed me in the hospital with severe stomach erosion & doesn’t always help. Invest in a good lavender filled heating/cool pad set. Preferably the ones you microwave. Lay back with heat on your neck and ice on your eyes until it passes if it does. Just keep working and I will pray for her daily. We all will.

Q: Sumatriptan Succinate for migraines, jaw pain?
I just took Sumatriptan for my second time to help my migraine go away. The first time I took it, I took it when I started getting the blind spots in my vision. I didn’t get a migraine so it worked nicely to prevent it. I did have sharp pains in my jaw, though, everytime I would chew something. I didn’t know if it was caused by the Sumatriptan or if it was from something else. So I got a really bad migraine today and decided to take the Sumatriptan again to see if it would help get rid of my migraine. I still have it and my jaw/ear area is veryy sore now. Its causing me a lot of discomfort. I dont know if its the Sumatriptan causing this or something else since I have been sick the past 2 weeks. My question is has any else experienced this? Is this a possible side effect of the medication or probably something else? I read that this medication could cause neck pain but nothing about jaw pain. Sorry this was hard to explain, I hope you can understand it alright.

A: OK, first of all, if you have jaw pain, you do not have a migraine- you have a cervicogenic headache. A cervicogenic headache is a headache caused by a misalignment of your head and neck. It can mimic a migraine right down to the nausea and pain behind the eye. However, jaw pain is usually caused by a misalignment of the base of the skull ( called the occiput) and the neck. This can produce pain in the jaw, headaches and grinding of the teeth at night.

I would recommend that you see a chiropractor. They specialize in correcting this type of condition. I will tell you I have corrected 6 people with symptoms like you are describing. However, the recovery time from the headaches depends on where the headache is. If the headache seems to start at the back of the head, the headaches can be stopped pretty quickly. If they are located in the temple region of the head, it will take longer while the jaw realigns itself once the head and neck are put back into alignment.

I wish you the best

Q: Horrible Migraine Headaches at 16?
I’ve had problems with headaches since about middle school. But I’ve learned to live with them. I used to never take much aspirin to relieve the pain. Maybe some Motrin every now and then.

But recently, my migraines have been more frequent and just completely numbing. I had one yesterday the minute I woke up and it lasted through the day.

The pain was practically unbearable. I took my medication, Sumatriptan, 25mg.

It didn’t help at all.

I was on my floor crying and grabbing my head trying to will the pain away. I didn’t want to mix a pain killer with my medication at the moment.

The migraines have gotten so bad that they interfere with my school things and dance classes.

ADD INFO:

I have iron deficiency anemia. And I’m on Loestrine FE.

Any ideas on what could be triggering these?
I can’t ask mom. Unfortunately, she passed two years ago. I don’t think ear accupuncture would be my thing =X

A: Migraines are tricky. I, too, started with them about your age. I am now 58. I am also a nurse.

I know this is going to sound DUMB, but it worked for me and a doctor gave me this to use. It works.

When a headache begins, take two benedryl and a cup of black hot coffee. Your headache will be gone in short order

I will also add that you NEED medical attention and do not fool with your meds, etc. Follow a doctor’s order on all meds.

The best thing after everything is said and done is a dark room, a cool rag on your forehead and complete quiet. That helps too, especially after you take the benedryl and coffee.

Good luck.

Q: severe headaches with pain in my actual eyeball and temple and neck?
i have these headaches which this one started with a such severe pain was like pressure in my skull went up like instantly i had pain in my temple and my eye actually hurts if i move it or gently touch it its there for days ,my gp said it sound like cluster headaches but i cant see how it can last this long its keeping me awake at night my neck plays up anyone no of a medication that may help it eased a little with sumatriptan but came back any ideas

A: You really need to see a Neurologist, preferably one that specializes in headaches to sort this out for you and get the right treatment. Based on the limited information you provide, this could be cluster headache (esp. if you are young and male), it could be migraine, could be tension headache, or it could be other disorders that really need to be identified (optic neuritis, temporal arteritis).

The Imitrex you tried could work for any of these. A trial of breathing pure oxygen by face mask is helpful to abort cluster headaches and aid the diagnosis. Long term treatment for migraine vs. cluster will be different so you need a doc that can move beyond “sounds like cluster”.

Q: Could marijuana help me medically?
I have a pretty severe social anxiety disorder, am prone to migraines, and am clinically depressed. I live in Washington State and am 16 years old, but I’ve been resistant to every medication I’ve tried for these conditions (fluoxetine, clonazepam, sumatriptan, and others).

I’m aware of the negative side-effects, but I really need something to help.

A: WOW i FCKING HATE PEOPLE!!!! do not listen to that first answer omg she has no fucking idea what shes talking about people like that piss me the fuck off… OK SO MARIJUANA can help you GREATLY!!! There are thousands of medical users that use marijuana SPECIFICALLY for depression and and chronic pain (migraines) and definitely anxiety… I am a medical card holder in cali and i have really bad anxiety and i go to the marijuana dispensary’s and buy sativa strains.. They help me so greatly and its so nice not worry now.AND since your in Washington your in luck.. since you can get marijuana there with a card. Those other medications you have tried… taking them are far worse for your body then medically grown marijuana that is very potent!! BY THE WAY TO THAT PERSON THAT SAID ITS POOR QUALITY medical grown weed is the best weed in the world idk where you got that from. SO DUDE JUST TRUST ME see if you can get a card go out there the people selling weed in the medical dispensary*clinics* are professionals and know just what you need. JUST TRY IT DUDE ..BECAUSE ITS TOTALLY HARMLESS.. AND IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT DON’T DO IT… Hope i helped

Q: Bad migraine after being in the sun. Help!?
I went on a hike earlier and was up on the mountain for about 4.5 hours, in mild heat (but very breezy) and sun. On my way home I got a migraine that I’ve now had for seven hours.

I have a few prescription migraine medications due to chronic headaches I’ve had for 3 months (no known cause yet), including Amitriptyline and Sumatriptan. I’ve taken both medications since the onset of this migraine with no relief. Could I possibly have heat exhaustion? My headache is the only symptom of it that I had until about an hour ago when I became nauseated, but it’s bad and I can’t get rid of it even with prescription medication.

A: If your on medications you probably already know this, but remove all stimuli from your environment. That means a dark room with no light or sound for a number of hours. This was the only thing that worked for me when I used to get them.

Q: Imigran Injection ( Cluster Headache )?
Hi
I suffer from cluster headaches and yesterday my doctor prescribed me with Imigran ( sumatriptan succinate )

I have taken this yesterday and the side effects were not nice, my head was tingling and my head was really heavy i was struggling to hold it up, i was also having hot flushes and and my throat felt like it was burning….. My question is has anyone ever taken this injection and do the side effects get better when your body gets used to the medication?

Any other experiences anyone has had with this would be grateful

Thanks in advance

A: Hi,

These are common side effects. You might be interested to read the conversation about side effects (and to explore the forum for cluster headache sufferers) here:

http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=meds;action=display;num=1190068904

One common trick to limit the side effects is to take less than a full injection of imigran/imitrex (same drug, different name depending on which country you’re in). The method is outlined here:

http://www.clusterheadaches.com/imitrex.html

Good luck, and may you get this thing under control!

Q: step 1 mcq hypertensive med ?
A 48-year-old man is brought to the emergency department by his wife after obtaining a blood pressure reading of 234/142 mm Hg on a home blood pressure monitor. In the emergency department, his blood pressure is 236/144 mm Hg. The patient states that he has always had poorly controlled blood pressure. He also states that he took medication for a migraine headache 2 hours earlier. Which of the following medications did he most likely take?
A. Diclofenac potassium
B. Ergotamine
C. Methysergide
D. Propranolol
E. Sumatriptan

i guessed d. note: i am in my 1st semester of med school and do step 1 prep qs in my spare time. often, i will be able to make an educated guess, provided the qs are not histo or pharm related. any help would be appreciated.

A: A. Diclofenac potassium…..nsaid- no

B. Ergotamine ….non-specific vasoconstrictor- works PERIPHERALLY (so hypertension is going to be a side effect)

C. Methysergide..for migraine prophylaxis-doesn’t fit what the pt said

D. Propranolol…beta-blocker…bp med can be used for migraine prophylaxis

E. Sumatriptan ..migraine treatment- vasoconstrictor that works on CEREBRAL ARTERIES (htn could be POSSIBLE, but between this and b- b is better because htn is LIKELY)

answer is B
(see what Peter or daddyrx says)

Q: Migraine Cocktail … Is it going to work? Or is it too much?
I am taking a Migraine Cocktail of:
Ultracet (Tramadol 37.5mg + Acetaminophen 325mg)
Ibuprofen 400mg
Flunarizine 5mg
Sumatriptan 50mg
Propanolol 10mg

I have had it for almost a week,
I have finished a box of extra strength Tylenol (Acetaminophen 500mg) and then
a box of Naloxen (Naproxen Sodium 550.0Mg)

Until I went to see a doctor today, who gave me the above cocktail mix… But, I am from South Africa, where our medication tends to be stronger than the medication given in Taiwan. So I whan to know if this mixture is going to work, or if I am wasting my time…

Please help!!!!

A: If it works it’s going to be because you aren’t feeling anything. Is that how you want your day to go? If you want to get rid of a migraine you should go after it where it originates, the neck and back muscles. Press your fingers into your temples and see if you get some relief. That would be short term, it is short circuiting the pain to your brain. If you want long term you have to go after the muscles in you back and neck and release them. When they are in pain from being tight or pinched, they give off a very intense message. When the brain is receiving that message, the intensity of it is seen only as pain. We have learned that was because it was in the brain, where it hurts, rather than outside of the brain. Here is the way you have to release those muscles:
For your neck:
place your hand alongside your head and push your thumb in under your ear and place it on the muscle there. Take your fingers and place them on the back of your neck on the muscles there. Press them together and hold a good amount of pressure on them. Then relax, take a deep breath an happening, the muscle going limp under the pressure. Continue to hold until the entire muscle has gone limp.
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.
As with other therapy’s you are going to have to do this one several times a day to for one week and once or twice a day for another week and then longer only if needed. You have to get all the muscles released to make this happen and get them all to remember where their new home is and that is the reason for the extended time. You should feel relief from the start but without the follow up it the migraine can reappear and be just as painful. The only way to be sure is to attack it in the above fashion.
