Q: Can taking prescription medicine cause damage to your teeth?
I take a large amount of different medicines throughout the day: Ritalin, Neurontin, Wellbutrin, Namenda, Lyrica, Provigil, Mobic, Maxalt, hydrocodone, and a few others. I have started having a lot of cavities lately even though I brush and floss regularly. Is it possible that these meds have effected the tooth enamel.
A: There could be a couple of reasons for this. If the medications use some kind of sugar as a binding agent for the pills, that could be a contributing factor.
However, I would guess that the most likely reason for the increased cavities is that the medicines are making your mouth dry. There is a whole list of them that can do this, and if you are taking several it could cause some problems. With a decreased flow of saliva, your teeth become less able to resist the acids that the bacteria in your mouth make whenever you eat. This causes cavities. There are several steps you can take to help with cavities from a dry mouth, such as drinking lots of water throughout the day, home fluoride treatments, etc, but I would definitely get some advice from your dentist.
Q: MAXALT: Does anybody have an uses for the empty boxes?
The prescription drug Mazalt comes in small plastic boxes.
We probably have 50 or a hundred of those (now empty) flip-top boxes. They are about 3 inches by 3 inches by one-half thick, plastic. It seems like they ought to be useful for something.
Has anyone found anything to use them for, after the medicine has been used up? Any ideas ?
A: Holding nuts, bolts, nails, safety pins, buttons, etc. You could label the tops of each one with what it holds.
You could also donate them to a local pre-school or elementary school. I’m sure they would find a fun use for them, and the art teacher would at least appreciate it.
Q: What is the best way to detox from Oxycotin dependency?
I have been prescribed oxycotin now for 5 years, first its was 10mg then 20mg and now at 40mg. I was told I would be on them the rest of my life because of my disability. I also have to take 120 Vicodin a month as well as 90 Valium, Cybalta and Maxalt. The days I forget to take the pain medicine as I did once on a vacation overseas for a week with family, I was in so much pain beyond normal and I was told this was because of detoxing from my pain killers. I have tried natural remedies already, shiatsu, acupuncre, deep massage therapy, creams, ointments, you name it. the only things that work are pain medicines and i hate the dependency on them, what can I do differant?
To those who say ride out the pain, I dare you to try it with mine.
To those understanding my problem:
My disability is several things from Full Myofacail problems with my verterbrae, to sleep apnea major and a knee that is so shot i can barely walk. I get migraines 2-3 times a week the keep me bed ridden and throwing up.
The Drs have tried PT, and walking and its not helping. i am a former Pro Athlete and have just done alot of damage to my body.
I agree I should stick to the regiment and be careful and have help. I already have an LNA helping.
A: I too am in a similiar situaion just not as many medicines as you. YOu might want to talk to your Dr again about your concern. Maybe have someone else help you control your medicines so you do not forget them? IF you say you have to be on them the rest of your life and you have tried all these other remedies and I assume exercise as well as Physical Therapy. If they say you have to be on them then you just might have no choice. Just dont run out and make sure someone else can help youcontrol them.
IF you dont need them Seboxin is great for Opiate additctions and dependancies.
Q: I accidentaly took a migrane medicine that exprired in 2007?!?!?
i’ve suffered from migranes for a long time, and took Maxalt MLT that expired in 2007!!! am i going to die?!?! lol .. what kind of effect does expired medicine have on you?
A: You’ll be fine. The expiration date for prescription meds is always set for one year from the date it was dispensed. That’s not the same as the date it really expires. Medications in tablet form have a really long shelf life. There’s just not anything in there to “go bad.” The only medications you have to really watch out for are those that require refrigeration. OTC liquids can begin to break down so throw those out if past the expiration date. But, you’ll be fine taking a pill from 2007.
Hope your headache feels better soon!
Q: Is Maxalt MLT REALLY safe since it contains Phenylalanine?
I have been given a trial sample of 10 Maxalt MLT by my doctor to treat my intense headaches but after reading the ingredients… this medicine contains Phenylalanine which is a component of the unsafe Aspartame. I was just wondering how safe this product really is given that Aspartame is known to be cancerous or cancer causing over time. Originally back in the day (1970’s) when Aspartame was created… the FDA wouldn’t approve it due to the cancer causing effects of the product but yet due to Republican politicians in the early 1980’s… it found it’s way to being FDA approved and available to the public in various ways.
A: Actually, Phenylalanine is a perfectly safe Amino Acid that is used in a few “bad things” on the market. It’s used as an ingredient in Aspartame and in antifreeze… but that doesn’t make the Amino Acid itself bad. It’s like if I put Vitamin C in some biological warfare chemical that killed entire cities… does that make Vitamin C itself bad?
There is unfortunately a lot of misguided (or at least misinformed) press out there that has said that Phenylalanine is bad for a few reasons (especially those I mentioned above), but it’s actually very good for mood support, mental function, and joint health… plus, you’ll find it as a natural component of many proteins
Q: Need help with medicine for migraines!!!?
I have excruciating migraines almost every day. I’ve seen my regular doctor & at least 3 neurologists & a chiropractor. I’ve been through numerous medications/pain killers. The medications that have worked are:
Methadone

Stadol
Hydrocodone 10mg
I have also tried to lie in a dark, quiet room and warm, relaxing baths. I can’t find anything so far that is non-narcotic that will help reduce the pain. I would rather find something that is non-narcotic, but am running out of options. My doctor doesn’t think outside the box, so she wants to prescribe medicines that I have already tried and that do not work or that I am allergic to.
Any help will be very much appreciated!!!
A: BOTOX!
It is a miracle for alleviating headaches, migraines and neck pain without having to take any drugs or risk addiction.
Most Pain Management Doctors and Clinics use Botox in their practice now. Ask about it.
It’s unbelievable!
Q: 7 months with migraine daily, what medicine could help?
Hi, I’m 15 and I’ve had migraines every day for 7 months. No, I am not exagerating. I’ve been diagnosed with them since I was little, and still no medicine really helps. I do not have a tumor, it has been checked quite recently.
My headaches can get to the point where I am crying and angry at everyone. Morphine had worked for a short period of time maybe an hour.
It doesn’t take much to set a headache off, I could be in lunch, waking up, trying to sleep, arguing with someone, or even just trying to listen to my favorite songs.
It’s gone to the point where I can’t hang out with friends that same and music has become dead to me in a way.
I have a neuro [cleveland] and he has given me maxalt (melts), maxalt (tablet), pronanolol (daily tablet)
I’ve been given many pills. But its hard to get pills that can help me cause doctors these days think all teens just wanna get f**ked up on pills.
Help would be nice,
Thank you!
A: CranioSacral Therapy works for migraines, even long-standing, idiopathic (means cause unknown) migraines. I’ve had many clients quite taking their meds because they no longer need them.

Q: Migraines: Tried Imitrix, but was allergic, now take Maxalt, and it’s not working, r there other’s to try?
I have severe Migraines, take Topamax 200 mg. a day & 20 mg. a day of Cymbalta to relieve the aggitation from Topamax, & tried Immitrix, was allergic, now on Maxalt when they come on which is about 20 a month, it’s like at least 2 weeks I have come to see every month straight, but the maxalt isn’t working. My Neuro, called in Depakote, which he doesn’t know, but I refuse to take, because I have heard too many bad reactions to it, and go tomorrow. What do I tell him, I’m not going to take it, it makes you gain weight, it’s taken me a year to lose 70 lbs & get to a healthy weight which I had to do, & I’m tired of taking medicines, & I know stress is a big cause of my migraines, have twins, in college, their dad and his family have been threatening my kids and me, which, we have restraining orders, but that’s just paper, I work when I’m supposed to be on disability, but have to help them w/college, they work 2 jobs,& go fulltime, so they r doing their part, their dad isn’t'& has $. Help
My neuro. is supposed to be the best around but I talked to pharmacist ect. and they advised me not to add the depokote with the topamax either, said the things it causes are hair loss, ect…and just tell him what I told them, that there are alot of other meds he can put me on besides that, it’s a stronge med and he put me on 1000 mg a day, and they said, like 5 different ones, that’s alot, and you gain weight, lose hair, have alot of things, and be honest, but my neuro is kinda an you know what, and doesn’t listen, I’m 43, my hair is one of my best features, I had to lose weight for my health, and I’ve worked too hard and did it right for life and all anti depressants, ect make me blow up over 200 lbs, whether the shrinks ect say it doesn’t , but cymbalta, and only take 20 mgs, and I’ve been careful with it, and it’s helped the aggitation with the topamax as I had hyperness with it not drowsiness, till the 200 and have to take the second 100 at night and cym because it knocks me out,
My eyes hurt soo bad, and this just all of a sudden came on welll, the migraines, never had them, seven months ago, and didn’t have a day of relief, had them 24/7, for three-4 months till the topamax kicked in, but it was really horrible getting used to the topamax, with it making me speed, everyone thought I was going nuts, I went so far as to go to a shrink, the neuro, and my dr. all in one day to figure out what was going on, and that’s when they put me on the cymbalta to calm the effect of the topamax, and then I got used to it, and refuse to get off, as it was too hard to get used to it, and there has to be something someone can do for me. Do I go get a second opinion, I try and stay away from stress, but have these crazy in-laws, which I’ve been divorced since my kids were 1, and their dad and his family are so rich but never paid a dime for them, which was fine, all I wanted was my kids, because he’s a drug addict, 42, lives in luxury, but has never done anythng for them & now
all this madness over the courts making him pay post miniorty support which I could careless or the kids, but they keep paying the lawyers, more than they are even paying the kids only because I left him all those years ago, which he said, he would always make my life hell the rest of my life, but he’s doing it to my kids, which, no matter what, no matter how grown, when they get text, but they are blocking all of them now, out of the blue from them, mean 1’s which they loved his family & it’s the fact, that they can’t buy this judge, & he has to pay my attorney but I’ve won after19 years, but not really&it’s me, not the kids, he has told them he didn’t want them I made him have them, & we were happy when we had them, he’s a drug addict and his family won’t face it, he’s been in at least 50 resort rehabs, why I left him ect& is still doing the hard stuff, & I don’t think he knows what he’s doing, but, when your kids call crying over their dad, sending text, &leaving mean things/it huts
another reason I left their dad and it’s so scary with his and families threats to my kids, is that he beat me so bad for years, and when my kids were one, I got out of the marraige, didn’t try and take half the business, anything, left, only wanted full custody, supervised visition with their dad to protect them, money didn’t matter, just my kids, and we struggled, but we had love and part of my disabiliity is I’m deaf from him beating me so bad, which he left me with alot of other handicaps. Internal ones, I have to have surgeries every year from, but, I’m alive, I made it, and though I might not live a full life from all his beatings, and go through horrible operations, I wont let him or his family do it to my twins. And I take xanex for my nerves to help, but sometimes that doesn’t help, I know I’m going to get a lecture from the neuro tomorrow and called the pharmacist, six, in fact, and all said dont’ start the depakote till I tell him my feeling,& all said, it makes u gain ect
A: You have to be honest with your doctor. Tell him EVERYTHING!! There ARE other meds for migraines. Ask him about Fiorinal or Fioricet.
I just looked up Depakote, and weight gain is NOT one of the side effects! They listed 15, and weight gain was not there!! Some good news for you for a change!! Go call a pharmacist. They are so smart. Do it, before you see the doctor. Call any drug store or pharmacy. Then be honest with your doctor. Tell him you didn’t want to gain back any of the 70 pounds, but now you know Depakote doesn’t cause weight gain.
The crap with your you kids and their dad will work itself out. Stop stressing about stuff you can’t change. Stress DOES bring on the migraines. So just settle down and breathe. Everything is going to be okay. Maybe you need a little something to calm you down……Good luck, hon.
Q: How dangerous is this?????
what happens if you take Maxalt (prescribed migraine medicine) without having any migraine or headache? Not asking for myself…just a worried friend.
for those that do not know, maxalt is a triptan..if it helps any.
he took one maxalt and feel asleep quickly…i have been keeping an eye on him and he seems okay…but I cannot sleep cause I am so worried.
A: This med is just an anti-inflamatory that relates to the blood vessels especially in the head and neck. Tylenol is an anti-inflamatory. This shouldn’t be a problem, but too much or too frequent and it is not good. No drug should be taken outside of it’s prescribed manner.
Q: Medicine not really preventing migraines?
I was having 2-3 migraines a week, so I was prescribed 25mg of Atenolol and I have Maxalt MLT for when I do get a migraine. At first it kind of seemed like it was working since I was only have maybe one migraine every other week. Within a couple of months though, I am back to having at least 1-2 a week. The Maxalt only really helps about half of the time.
I tried to tell my doctor that the Maxalt was not helping every time, but he just said that it must not be a migraine every time. Well, damn… they feel exactly the same.
The question is, should I find a new doctor or just wait it out?
A: Give your doctor one more chance and then, if he fails to respond to your request for different medications, find another doctor. There are lots of new migraine medications out there that you could be taking to keep these under control and have no sedative side effects. If you are unsuccessful with your next doctor, find one the specializes in migraine care.
Q: Migraine drug…medical professionals please help?
I have bad migraines. The doctors perscibed a 10 mg tablet called Maxalt. I am suppposed to take one by mouth as needed. I can take another after 4-6 hours. Sometimes it doesnt work and I think I might need a new medicine. Maxalt works good…when it works. Is there a higher mg tablet out there? What different meds work the best? What should I be asking the doctor for when I go in?
A: The unfortunate thing with migraines drugs is it is really hit or miss until you find one that works. Be very open and honest with your doc or neuro about it. There are so many options out there now. Triptans are what are prescribed the most often to take at the onset of a migraine. The different brands are maxalt, relpax, zomig, imitrex. They all work a little different. Take a look at this website, www.migraines.org, it has profiles for all migraines meds on the market to today. Plus lots of other info for sufferers.
Q: Anyone taking Topamax for migraines have eye pain?
I take topamax for migraines, and take 200mgs a day and it’s really helped me, but I’ve noticed I am having eye pain now. Who do I tell? My neurologist, or go to my eye dr. for this. I’ve heard that this medicine can lead to blindness if it is a certain eye pain, and not sure which dr. to go to…anyone else have this symtom from it. Otherwise, it has helped, still have migraines and have to take maxalt when I get migraines, to stop them, but used to have them 24/7 and now have them only about 10 a month, big difference….but, lost alot of weight, which was good, but, it was so hard at first the symtoms I had to get used to when they put me on it, I just don’t want to have to get off of it, it was horrible the first three months getting used to the medicine, but don’t want to go blind either, been on it around 7 months, and heard it’s really hard to get off of, and if it’s like it was getting on it, I don’t think I can deal with it. But can’t afford to go blind, I’m deaf already?
A: sorry to hear that. i got migraines too. bad ones and its agonizing. nway i cant remember what kind of meds my dr. prescribed me. will check later. but yes, i heard of the possible blindness when u suffer terrible migraines and depend on meds to cool it down. when i got migraines, my eyes hurts together. its like at the back of my eyes that hurts a lot. like a pulling-pain. oh and normally whenever i got migraine, i will see my dr and i will be given an injection wihich the pain and numbness on the injection spot will last more than a week!
but in ur case, do see ur dr that prescribed ur the meds. seeing ur eye dr is also good =)
Q: Taking prescription drugs when not sick…need advice asap!?
what happens if you take Maxalt (prescribed migraine medicine) without having any migraine or headache? Not asking for myself…just a worried friend.
A: MAXALT is a powerful prescription medicine that offers proven relief from migraine pain. MAXALT also helps relieve migraine-associated symptoms of nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. MAXALT does not contain aspirin or caffeine and is not a narcotic.
Only your healthcare professional can determine if MAXALT is right for you. You should not take MAXALT if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease or history of heart disease, or if you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitors within the last two weeks, or are taking certain other medications.
In clinical studies with MAXALT, the most common side effects reported were dizziness, sleepiness, tiredness, fatigue, and pain or pressure sensation (eg, in the chest or throat).
Q: Persistant headache/migraine for 3 days?
I tried Tylenol the first day, a prescription migraine medicine called Maxalt the second day, and Excedrine today. The last two helped ease the pain but did not even come close to getting rid of it. It is not a sinus headache or tension headache, I know how those feel. The prescription helped the most but I can’t take it if I’m working or driving because it makes me a space cadet and dizzy.
I’ve told multiple PCPs and a neurologist about my headaches/migraines but none of them seem to be concerned. Even after an MRI show white spots on my brain that could be related to migraines.
Should I be taking a different type of medicine? I know Tylenol and Excedrine are acetaminophen. Should I be using ibuprofen? What could make it not go away even with medicine?
A: sounds like your on top of the research, my daughter developed migraines after her son was born, which they say has nothing to do with them but my opinion is they haven’t researched hormones related to migraines to know what they are talking about, anyway my point is ask your doc, about tramadol, they help my daughter, and don’t make her drowsy..good luck, and how is your caffeine and chocolate intake these aggravate them..
Q: Question about meds?
Is it okay to take Maxalt the migraine medicine for a migraine and then hours later take percocet?
A: The interesting thing about Misty’s answer is that she has already checked out this scenario with her doctor. That is key!
It doesn’t sound like you’ve checked out this possibility with your doctor, but I think you need to. Did your dr prescribe both Maxalt AND percocet? If your dr things you are able to handle migraine pain with the maxalt alone, but you’re really taking maxalt + percocet there is a major disconnect in the communication department happening. I would check with your dr on this one. There are TONS of possible migraine treatment plans available now. There might be a more efficeint one out there for you.
Good luck!
