Q: Prescription medication for migraines other than Maxalt?
My doctor recently prescribed Maxalt for my migraines. She did no work up or any other kind of investigation into the migraines. I’ve been having them most of my life (I’m 40), and she decided that Maxalt is the only one that will work for me. The prescription is expensive even with a co-pay as there is no generic Maxalt yet. What else is there out there? I have tried Midrin (or the generic for it) with moderate results, nothing I would get excited about. I have also used vicodin in a pinch, though it makes me more nauseous. I won’t be seeing that doctor again, but wanted to have some drug names to mention and discuss with my other doctor (the one I actually prefer) when I go in for my exam. Looking for something tried-and-true that’s been around a while so I don’t have to pay through the nose just for the co-pay. Something available in generic will only cost me $4-10. We’ll be losing our insurance, soon, anyway, and the Maxalt without insurance coverage is $336.89 for 12 tablets. (I am not kidding.)

A: It is the job of the physician to decide what medication is right for you. You shouldn’t go in and start naming off drugs that you want to try. That said, you should let your doctor know that your financial situation does not allow you to buy the expensive medications that do not come in generic form. If he prescribes you something you cannot afford, you have the right to refuse that treatment, but just be sure you tell him your situation.

Q: eye migraine and when to take medication?
I just had an eye migraine and i usually get a massive head ache 15-20 min after my vision returns. I also get nauseous and cold. I have a script for maxalt. When should i take this medication? I have only had this happen 2 times in my life. Right now i just feel sick to my stomach.

A: yuo should take it as soon as you know it is a migraine.

Q: Cheap prescription migraine medication?
I suffer from migraine headaches. The insurance through my work does not cover migraine medication at all (and there is no way to upgrade the insurance to a plan that pays for it). Does anyone know of any cheap prescription medication for migraines? I know that rizatriptan (Maxalt) works really well for me, but it costs $117 for 6 pills.

A: Don’t know, but I take Relpax and it’s $5 a pill, just FYI

Q: Any unconventional migraine headache remedies?
I”ve had a steady headache for about 5 days now.
Usually I’ll take some maxalt(migraine medication) and naproxen(aleve) and it’ll be gone within about an hour. Although its been helping, the headache returns a couple hours later. I’ve since tried ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
I’ve gotten to the point where I just don’t kow what else to do anymore!

A: Once a headache begins, I take a Maxalt and two Excedrin Migraine together.

If I am getting the headache everyday (like the last few days) I wake up in the morning before a headache begins and take one Excedrin Migraine every two hours all day in hopes that I don’t end up getting one that day. Some times it works! If one begins I quickly take a Maxalt and lie down in a dark room with a cool compress over my eyes. The Excedrin usually keeps it from being too bad.

Good luck to you!

Q: How do you relieve pain of migranes if medications and pills arnt working?
I have chronic migraine disorder and sometimes the medication that i take (MAXALT-MLT 10MG OD TABLETS) does not work and i have cried, it hurt so bad so i need some things that might help the pain.

A: It could be cluster headaches and they do not respond to imitrex or any of the other migraine meds, the only thing that works for me is Excedrine, if you have not already tried it, give it a try! I hope they go away for you.

Q: What is an effective and safe migraine medicine I can take when trying to conceive?
I was recently diagnosed with what my doctor called a “textbook case” of migranes. I do not need preventative medication as they are not that frequent (maybe once per month). He prescribed Maxalt which is working well but I’m not sure if it is safe if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

A: I’ve had migraines as long as I can remember… I’ve taken Maxalt, Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax – they’re all about the same and do the same to an unborn baby. It’s safe while you’re TTC, but very unsafe while you’re pregnant. Since you have no way of knowing if you conceived or not until you’re already 2 weeks along, I would only take them if very necessary during the first part of your cycle before you suspect ovulation. I think there are some safer alternatives you can talk to your doctor about, but in my experience not much else helps as far as medicines if it’s truly a migraine. Fortunatley for me my migraines eased up while I was pregnant – all 3 times! Good luck to you!

Q: Am I over-medicated, the same physician practice prescribed all medications to be taken daily or as needed?
My Medication List is as follows:
Daily: seroquel, asmanex,Prevacid, adderall, HCTZ (blood pressure), bupropion, and citalopram
As needed:maxalt mlt, tramadol, propoxyphene, and loratadine.

I have been diagnosed bi-polar and depressed, ADHD, asthma, GERD, have been in 3 car accidents, and migraines. Any insights would be helpful. Thanks

A: You may want to get a second opinion, or talk to some specialists in the areas in which you’ve been diagnosed. I’m not saying you are over-medicated, but that it is good to be cautious and aware of side effects or interactions.

Additionally, there are some physicians out there who rely so much on medication that they lose sight of actually helping patients.

Q: Does anyone else get jaw pain with a migraine?
I’m getting migraines now everyday and the only thing to help is Maxalt, but the doc doesn’t like to prescribe that much of the medication. I also get jaw pain before and during the migraine. Anyone else have this problem? If you do, what do you do for it?

A: You are most likely suffering from problems with your TMJ. This is the joint that moves your lower jaw. I got chronic migraines, ringing in the ears, back pain and jaw pain/swelling that was ruining my life a couple years ago. I was diagnosed with TMJ disorder. I had to go out on my own and find a true specialist to help with the problem, as my dentist and primary-care doctor did not know what to do and did not seem to take it very seriously.

I now have a mouthpiece I wear to correct my bite, and I feel like it has saved my life! Go to http://www.tmj.org/ and get more info on the disorder. You can google TMJ specialist and the name of your city to research doctors with specialized training in this area or visit the website for the American Academy of Orofacial Pain: http://www.aaop.org/ This site is great, and helps you to make sure your “specialist” is actually certified in the medical area.

Good luck with getting treatment and don’t give up! You cannot ignore this problem, as it will just continue to worsen without treatment. Don’t let your jaw cartileage deteriorate any further before seeking help.

Q: Can you use Topamax and abortive migraine medicines together?
I was just prescribed Topamax for preventive migraine treatment and was wondering if anyone knew if you can still take abortive medications (like Maxalt) with the Topamax, or does it have a negative reaction together? What do you do if you get a migraine while on the Topamax?

A: I take topamax everyday and then I take the Maxalt right before I feel a migraine coming on…this is what my Doctor gave me and it has been wonderful so far.

Q: Can certain medications cause a female to spot bleed and have sore breasts before her period?
I am taking medications for lower back pain with radiculopathy, Tension Headaches and Migraine Headaches. I am taking the following medications Nortryptyline 75 MG, Maxalt 10 mg, and Butalbital/APAP/ Caffeine Tabs and Birth Control Pills.

A: Your birth control piills can cause the spot bleeding and sore breasts. When I was on BCP, my periods were usually only spotting and not much more than that. Also, some of your medications may be giving you an adverse reaction. Suggest you discuss this with your physician.

I don’t know why you are taking caffeine tabs since you are taking Maxalt and Butalbital. I realize that caffeine can help a headache, but there are other treatments and you are receiving them. Discuss with your doctor. He may suggest putting you on a medication to keep you from getting migraines There is a particular medication that is used as a preventative for migraines and I had to go on that myself for a few months. It helped for a long time. Maxalt works well, doesn’t it? Put one under the tongue and almost immediately you can feel the effects of it. I could always feel it in my neck first. Just ask your doctor if you should be on caffeine tablets unless he prescribed them. Might be a good idea for the two of you to review all your meds and any others you are taking over the counter.

Q: when headache medication doesn’t work?
I have been on Topamax for a long time. I have also taken Imatrex, Maxalt, and all kinds of generic migrain medications. I have seen two Neurologists, an Internist, an ENT (who did sinus surgery), an Opthomologist, a Dentist, and even a Pyschiatrist. I have daily headaches and cannot get relief. The pain is behind my eyes, and is there when I wake up! I had a sleep study done! I have had CT scan and M.R.I.’s I have taken up stock in Tylenol, and I am sure I will die of liver failure at this rate. Any suggestions?

A: As a nurse I have two suggestions. First stop taking more than 2000 mg of Tylenol per day, or you will damage your liver. Second, when the more currently traditional medical methods are failing to control your pain, you might want to consider a more homeopathic approach, such as acupuncture, acupressure, massage therapy, hypnotism, etc. I have worked with hundreds of patients with chronic pain, and they have made me a believer in leaving no stone unturned in order to achieve relief. Many insurance companies also now accept alternative medicine, and have pain control clinics and experts in every field of medicine that may be able to help you. Best of luck.

Q: Maxalt MLT? Anyone take it?
Prescribed it today for my migrane headache (which has lasted about 1 week), I just recently began getting this horrible pain in the back, lower part of my head, diagnosed as a migrane. Anyways, just took an orally disolving tabled about 10 min ago, I’m always nervous when I take new medication. So far so good. Anyone else take this?
also, how long does it take for the medicine to start working? And how soon will I know if I’m experiencing any side effects?

A: I’ve taken it a few times- works best at the very onset of a migraine. It helped me and I didn’t have any side effects. (I did on imitrex)

Q: Can certain medicines cause a female to have sore breasts and spot bleed before her period?
I am taking medicines for lower back pain with radiculopathy, Tension Headaches, and Migraine Headaches. I am taking the following medications: Birth Control Pills, Nortryptyline 75 MG, Maxalt 10 mg MLT, Tramadol 50 MG, and Butalbital/APAP/ Caffeine Tablets.
I do not beleive that I am pregant. I went on October 17, 2006 to the Health Department and got a physcail done. The Health Department took a pregancy test then, it was negative. The Health Department gave me more Birth Control
Pills to take.
I normally do not spot bleed before my period and that is why I posted this question.

A: Caffine can seriously muck up your biomechanisms and it could well be responsible for your problems, get medical advice…;

Q: I have a Terrible Headache- HELP!!?
I have tried everything in my power to get rid of the worlds worst migraine- I’ve taken Maxalt (migraine medication), drank a coke, taken tylenol. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

A: lay in your room with a cool cloth on your forehead. Migraines suck! Also take advil to work in conjunction with your migraine medication. If it is really completely intolerable you can always go to the emergency room and they can give you stronger pain medications. Good luck!
