Q: What does imitrex do to you when taken at high doses?
The other day my friend took multiple imitrex pills, prescribed to him for his migraines. Does anyone know exactly what that does to your body in high doses and what the impaired effects are? I would like to scare him and hopefully give him a wake up call about his drug use. THANKS!

A: See the overdosage consequence in animal and also the side effects, higher dose will lead to higher likelihood of side effect:

Q: What are some possible substitutes or generic options for imitrex???
Without insurance 6 pills of imitrex costs almost $120. Are there any generic brands or can anyone swear by another drug as a comprable substitute when it comes to extreme migraines?? I’m not really trusting of those Canadian/overseas imported drugs either because there are so many scams out there, but I’d still like to hear about others’ experiences, especially if you’ve found a legitimate website and can somehow prove it. Thanx!

A: Imitrex (brand name) or sumatriptan succinate (generic name) has no other substitute in the generic class.

There are other serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonists such as almotriptan malate, naratriptan hycrochloride, rizatriptan benzoate, zolmitriptan.

Best to ask your physician about a cheaper alternative that is appropriate for your condition.

Q: how long should I be off imitrex before ttc?
I’ve heard you should not take imitrex for at least 5 days before ovulating. I would never take it while pregnant, but am I safe taking some while I have my period?

A: I do all of the time…Seriously. That’s my major time when I take it. Ranges from 3 days before to 3 days after when major migranes come. I’ve used injectable and inhalable. I’ve never had any issues.

Q: Is there anything better than imitrex for migraines?
I’ve tried alot of medications for migraines and every doctor that I go to seems to think that imitrex is the “it” drug. It’s not working for me and I don’t know what to do. I’m on a daily preventative (topomax) and that’s not woring very well either. Any suggestions?

A: I recommend Toradol. Toradol is a non-narcotic pain reliever but it is a powerful one. It does not have the euphoric effects of drugs such as Demerol or Darvocet but it works just as well. It is now available in oral tablet form (previously, it was only available by injection).

As for preventive medications, Tegretol is a good one. It is an antiseizure medication but it is effective for those of us with chronic migraines. Before I started taking Tegretol (about 15 years ago), I had migraines a couple of times a month. Now, I might get 3-4 a year. When I do get one, 20 mgs of Toradol is usually enough to get rid of it.

You can build up a resistance to Imitrex. I used it when it first came on the market, used it for a year or two and now it is uneffective with me. I used the injectable form. Since I’m a longtime diabetic, shots are nothing to me.

Try to stay away from narcotics. It’s too easy to build up resistance and become addicted.

Q: How many Imitrex tablets come in a prescription?
How many Imitrex tablets come in a prescription? Meaning — when you pick up your pills from the pharmacy, how many do you get? Also, about how much are you paying?
Hi – thanks …. My doctor did give me 3 samples to see if they work —- fortunately they did. I looked into the prescription information & I didn’t know if I was reading it correctly. It seemed that 9 pills would be costing me $83 with insurance, which is ridiculous …

A: The price you pay for a 30-supply depends on your insurance. With mine, it’s a $10 co-pay.

I have a whole list of migraine meds. If you would like it, feel free to E-mail me. Good luck, hon. :)

Q: Taking an imitrex injection while pregant?
Hi everyone, i am freaking out! I just found out i am pregnant (5 weeks) and I suffer from severe migraines. I took an imitrex shot before I knew. My doc says i’ll be fine, but all the reading I’ve done is scary. Did anyone else out there take imitrex while pregnant?

A: Try not to worry. Women do all kinds of things before they knew they were pregnant and everything turns out fine. I would speak to your doctor about alternative medicines for your migraines during pregnancy, since sometimes they get worse. My migraines actually eased up through this pregnancy, but my doctor ok’d darvocet for my pain if needed. Just don’t worry about what already happened – your doctor says you’re fine, so that should put your mind at ease!

Q: Can I mix imitrex with other medications?
I took imitrex 2 hours ago for a migraine which is now gone. I just suddenly got my period (which explains the migraine) but I want to take advil (ibuprofen) to avoid cramps which I can feel coming on now.

Is it safe? Its been 2 hours since I took imitrex.
THANKS FOR THE INFO!

A: DaddyRX is right! Imitrex can be mixed with NSAIDs like Advil. After all, they have a new product combining Imitrex with Naproxen (a new expensive product because regular Imitrex was going generic).

Q: Is it safe to take Imitrex with other meds?
I take Lopressor and Dyazide for my HBP along with copd meds. I’m just wondering if this will lower my BP too low.

A: Speak to your pharmacist or doctor asap! Not worth the risk!

Q: Can imitrex mess up my body or be dangerous?
Lately, ive been getting more migraines than usual and I took maybe 4 imitrex already this month :/ This isnt the first time this has happened, and doctors havent really been able to help me. Sometimes, the imitrez helps keep the pain at bay but it comes back the next day and I take another one…

Can imitrex be messing with my body? Could it be causing rebound migraines? Ugh… sometimes, I wonder why I havent died yet -_-

A: I use to take imitrex. It just made me feel sicker. Maybe you should talk to the doctor about changing medication. I started taking Relpax a few months ago and it works way better. I have less migraines and it works before the nausea and vomiting kicks in.

Q: If naproxen is contraindicated when taking Imitrex(it is), why have they made Treximet, containing naproxen?
Treximet is made by the same company that makes Imitrex. A listed contraindicated medication when taking Imitrex is naproxen, but Treximet IS a combination of naproxen and the same medication in Imitrex.
Anyone know of the new research that supports the acceptance of this?

A: There is no real drug-drug interaction that occurs between Imitrex and Naproxen. Imitrex is designed to prevent vasodilation in the brain, stopping the migraine at its point of development. Most people use Naproxen to treat the pain associated with their migraine headaches, which is no problem. However, taking the two together will not allow you to tell if the Imitrex (which is quite expensive) is working properly at aborting the migraine.

Q: Can you take Lortab and Imitrex together?
I get migraines often, and treat them with Lortab, but sometimes even that isn’t enough. Can I take Imitrex right after, or am I stuck waiting 4-6 hours for the Lortab to be out of my system?

A: I wouldn’t know but you can call any pharmacist and ask, they should know the components of each medication and be able to tell you..

Q: Is the medicine imitrex related to arthritis in any way?
Related as in causing it to get worse.

A: related in what way–as in causing or treating

i beleivei t is a migraine med

Q: What are the side effects of IMITREX nasal spray for migraines?
Is there drowsiness?

A: no drowsiness, but my husband takes it and it can burn pretty bad for the 1st few min. but, it is safer than the injections, if you have more ?’s plz feel free to email me from my profile and I or my husband can answer any of your concerns, he has very bad cluster headaches and has been on them for years.

Q: Is it bad to take 1-2 Imitrex a week for tension headaches?
How much Imitrex is “too much” before you should go see the doctor again?

A: first of all Imitrex is NOT for tension headaches- it is specifically for migraines. Imitrex is not a “pain pill” that will work on any pain. so if you have “tension” headaches don’t waste your money on the imitrex- and if you are having migraines 3 times a week you need to see your dr. for medicine that can prevent them not just abort them once they occur

Q: I was recently prescribed Imitrex for migraines and have a problem- please help!?
I took Imitrex today for the first time, and then went to choir rehearsal. During the middle of it, I had the sudden urge to urinate, which continued throughout the rest of the rehearsal.

When I got back, I finally went, and I noticed a little bit of blood in my urine.

I hadn’t drank much all day, and went just before I left. Could the Imitrex have anything to do with it?

A: I also take immatrex for migranes i never had blood in my urine though mabey you should read this
