Q: Why can’t I split my Imitrex tablets?
I take 100 mg Imitrex tabs. My Mum takes 25 mg, so a smaller dose apparently works. Why can’t I split my 100 mg tabs into a couple of more or less 50 mg tabs?
A: You might be able to. Ask your pharmacist. Some tablets are made especially to dissolve slowly, and by cutting them you destroy the release mechanism. Your pharmacist can tell you if you can cut the Imitrex without altering its release.
Q: Question for others who may take Imitrex Injections?
I’ve already given myself two shots today, which is the max in 24 hours, and still have no relief from pain. Do you know what the effects may be if I take an Imitrex tablet (50mg) along with the two injections. Thanks for any help.
Thanks for being such smart alec answers!
**Thank you Michael**
**pdevans** I have suffered with migraines my entire life & know what’s “real” and what’s not. I, however, do not have the world’s worse migraine today. I know what it’s like to be incapacitated and hospitalized with a headache. I asked a simple question if anyone has combined the injections with the shots. If you don’t have the answer, I don’t need a lecture.
(edit) “combined injections w/ tablets”
A: Be aware; it is *possible* to overdose on Imitrex:
In clinical studies conducted before Imitrex was approved, higher-than-usual doses of Imitrex did not result in any adverse reactions. However, there have been so few reported cases of an Imitrex overdose that the full effects are not known.
That being said, it’s not likely. The half-life for Imitrex is 2.5 hours. If you’ve taken two doses in the past 24 hours, taking an Imitrex tablet (50mg) will not hurt you. As always, I recommend consulting with your phsyician before increasing your dosage of any prescription medication!
Q: Imitrex – Mirgraine pill question?
My dr just called in some Imitrex to treat my mirgrines. Does this med cost a whole lot? we have Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Also is the tablet hard to swollow? I have trouble swollowing pills if they are large.
A: Well, I know that you asked about imitrex pills, but i thought i’d let you know about the cost of the imitrex injections. I also suffered from migraines, and because I threw up with every one of my migraines (they got really, really bad: numbness, loss of vision, throwing up with upset stomach…the works) i was put on the injections. i have blue cross blue shield of alabama through my husbands job in tennessee and my prescriptions cost about $50 every three months for 6 injections (we are required to get our prescriptions through mail order pharmacy). I dont think thats too bad, i guess. If we were having to pay out of pocket each injection would cost about $200. The injections worked about 60% of the time. the other times i would still have to go to the emergency room. good luck.
Q: Suggestions for chronic migraines?
I have had migraines since I was 2 yrs. old (31 now). I have been out of work for a year and a half because of them. I have tried pretty much everything and was wondering what others use to prevent/control them?
I have tried numerous triptans, chiro, acupunture, numerous preventatives including Topamax, done the diets.
I am currently using Imitrex tablets combined with a strong anti-inflammatory for most and Imitrex injection for the worst. I also take Tylenol 3, which doesn’t end them, but knocks me out which helps. I try not to take more than 2 Imitrex a week because of rebounds.
I know definite triggers and stay away from those (chocolate, alcohol, MSG, etc)
Any suggestions are appreciated!
I tried Botox…didn’t help the migraines but I had a nice smooth forehead for a few months!
I have been to numerous Drs including neurologists.
I do use peppermint oil on my temples and in my bath when I have one.
I get both cluster and migraines but mainly migraines. The cluster headaches I get only every few months
I have been on Antidepressants for 10 yrs…for depression! And tried additional ones for prevention.
I have recently found out about combination triggers. I try to stay away from food triggers completely. Stress, hunger and over tiredness are big ones for me.
A: Where did you get the list of triggers?
I occasionally get a recurrence, but after living with it and taking too many of the old style drugs seem to have mostly managed to avoid them.
What you may be doing is looking at triggers and assuming that because something doesn’t trigger a migraine in itself, that it isn’t a trigger.
Red wine is a trigger for some people So you drink it and you feel fine. But if you drink red wine, have a little stress and drive at night with steadily pulsating lights, you may have hit a combination trigger. Another time it may be only the red wine combined with slightly off cycle fluorescent lights.
What you need to do when you get over an episode is to construct of diary of the hours before it happened. Don’t leave out things that may have had a delayed impact.
I eat raw mushrooms occasionally, but they are a trigger. Not cooked. Usually it gets by. Aspirin like compounds re sometimes a trigger (red wine is high in them). It could be something else. But you won’t hit that particular trigger until you reach a threshhold. Bad example, but you drink red wine, have three aspirin and eat or drink other tthings with similar molecular structure.
One thing you need to do if this continues is to find a doctor who either has or has had Migraines. They know what you’re going through.
There are also Migraine speciality practices or clinics that, in some cases, are both good and helpful.
Q: how do YOU deal with migraines???
i usually take my migraine medicine but its too expensive (its about $300 for 9 tablets….Imitrex)….lately i have been using advil and the sort….
do your migraines knock you off your feet for about 2 days like mine do???
A: Migraines can do wicked things to your body.
Personally, I take 800mg of Advil and attempt to get some rest.
I generally prescribe Ketorolac for patients who are experiencing mirgraines, primarily due to the fact that it is so inexpensive.
If seeing a physician is not an option, just nurse yourself back to heath. Remember, get enough rest but not too much.
I hope you get better soon!
Q: im tired of headaches and my doctor not dg anything about it… HELP!?
i am 16 years old and i have had headaches since i was about 9. i have one almos every single day and it is very rare for me not to have one. my doctor has told me to take 800 MG of Ibuprofen every 6 hours until my headache goes away. this works after i repeat taking it about 4 times. and i take it so much tht my body isnt really respinding to it anymore. and besies im tired of taking the kind of medican that can give you stomach bleeding and upsets ur stomach. i do eat but most of the time wen i do take it i am not hungry, but i have to eat so i dnt get an upset stomach, even thou eating wen im not hungry makes my stomach upset anyways.
my doctor has also put me on Imitrex, and i only get 6 tablets of tht for every 3 months. andi can only take it twice a month. so i hae to be careful of which headache i chose to take it for.
other than giving me medicane to keep me frm coming back into the doctors office, those doctors dont give me any other soltion.
i got a CT Scan back wen i was 10 or so, and it came out saying tht i ddnt having anything wrong, and they couldnt do anything to help me. and now they wont et me get another one… idk y, but i belive i need another one. i belive that there is something going wrong with me.
but becasue of my age the doctors dont really listen to me.
they just keep telling me that im ok, and im normal, that every teenager has headaches just like me.
i have missed so much skool over my headaches, im on the verge of failing my sophmore year in high school.
i wish there is something else i can do
any meds anyone has to reccomend, or something i could tell my doctor or ask my doctor..

help me plz =[
i do get migrains too... and wen i get those they r bad. i did have one doctor frm the same office put me on a headache preventer, but its didnt help. im also on an allergy pill at the moment.
A: Use "Flying Tiger Balm". It does sting but it is EXTREMELY effective. I suffer from migranes and am prone to headaces, so using this product has made my life so much easier- seriously, it's a life saver.
Q: Migraine help, urgent and need help?
As of right now my migraine has been going on for 72 hours, Imitrex does but a small dent in it, makes it a bit more tolerable but how do I have this go away, any advise. Just ran out of imitrex too cause they only give you 9 tablets in a case, can't refill till monday. Today even opiate medication does not get rid of it, over the last 9 hours Ive taken 50mg oxycodone and it makes it so I feel better but I feel it in the background still.
ive always had bad headaches, haven't had a migraine now for several months, I am about to goto sleep and would like any advise how I should start my day off if I still have this headache, does diet, exerise help. Today I did exercise pretty heavy, steam room and not sure if this made it worse and also I didn't eat all day till just recent because of the nausea I get from it. my eyes are very sensitive to light, ears to sound.
I would like to conquer this tomorrow, what steps should l take, and what should I avoid.
horrible pain, I pray that when I wake up, the pain will be gone.
[I do care!]
I really hope I don’t have to go that route where I need to go into the E.R. I have strong opiate medication on hand so.. Want to enjoy my weekend, so this migraine could go on for several more days.
I can’t take nsaids, Ive had pancreatitis and was told never to take nsaids.
I really hope imitrex or oxycodone can cause the headache to rebound, I am out of imitrex now anyways, and I am taking 20mg oxycodone every 4 hours.
I am ready to pass out, going too before this medication starts to down,
How about diet, sugars, breakfeast should just be oatmeal and couple eggs.
A: Don’t take medicines in excess, and try a single 500mg tablet of paracetamol.
And research studies have shown that positive thinking and saying in your mind or to yourslef ” Im not having….(in your case) headache”
It will help you alot.
Be Positive
