Q: what exactly is cafergot and how does it differ from midrin? How is it the same etc. or is it the same.?
I was given cafergot when midrin was difficult to find and it seemed to make me feel worse. Midrin is the only med that has worked for my headachs and eye strain so why was cafergot chossen as a runner up. My doc said she was giving everyone the perscription for cafergot who was currently taken midrin.
A: Cafergot and Midrin are both used to treat migraines, but they are not the same medications by a long shot. Cafergot is a compound of caffeine and ergotamine- a chemical derived from a mold growing on rye originally. Cafergot is an abortive migraine treatment, meaning it works best to help head off a migraine. It’s taken at the first symptoms of the migraine starting. It isn’t very effective against a migraine already well developed. Both the chemicals in cafergot are vasoconstrictors, though- and work to reduce the dialation of blood vessels in the brain. Unfortunately their effect is not limited to brain tissue alone, and vasoconstrict throughout the entire body. Patients who use it often note cold hands and feet as a result. Ergotamine can also create a dependance if taken too often, and not taking it can also trigger a migraine. For this reason, it’s not recommended for patients with frequent migraines. Midrin is a drug composed of two other drugs compounded with Tylenol, Dichloraiphenazone and Isometheptene Mucate. The Dichloraiphenazone is a mild sedative that affects your emotional response to the pain and slightly dulls your perception of it. The Isometheptene is a vasoconstrictor, reducing the dialation of the blood vessels. And of course, you know what Tylenol does- it raises your pain threshold. Midrin is also taken at the first sign of a migraine or tension headache, but it has the advantage of also working to reduce a headache in progress- unlike the cafergot. Cafergot works will when taken it time, but if you miss the optimum time- you will still suffer the headache. Not everyone with migraines responds well to cafergot, and it causes nausea with some folks- either that or you are already too nauseated to keep it down. It comes in a suppository form as well- which helps if cafergot works for you otherwise and you just need to keep it down long enough to work. If Midrin works for you, and you don’t get the same kind of relief with Cafergot, tell your doctor that and that you want a script for Midrin. I don’t know why it should be hard to find, and a well stocked pharmacy should certainly have it in stock.
Q: Would anyone happen to know why they never sell Cafergot in the States?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cafergot
This is an explanation as to what Cafergot is.
I use it mostly for my severe migraines and I’ve never seen it in any of the pharmaceuticals in the states.
Is it illegal to sell there?
Edit @ Ben: No, I never saw the correlation, till now that is; I rechecked my link. Anyways; it doesn’t really matter, in the least bit, because it’s the only thing that works.
A: http://www.drugs.com/pro/cafergot.html
It’s legal, by prescription only. You understand that it’s Ergot (black mold), right?
Q: What will happen if i continue to use lexapro xanax and alprolazam and cafergot and darvacet?
A: Someone will need too write / read a eulogy at your funeral.
Q: Can i die from Cafergot overdose?
So ive taken about 10 pills of cafergot today im curious can i die from it or do i need to take more
A: i am afraid i would not give you a good answer ,although i am a professional nurse , the medications that you are taking should be asked or checked from the doctor as i have researched the medications have side effects which may ruin your health.
Q: Can you make acid (lsd) out of cafergot?
on wikipedia it lists ergotamine as a precursor to lsd, so I just wondered if it is possible and how? Not because I would ever pursue it, (that stage of life is over) but just for curiosity sake.
A: LSD is extremely difficult to make from scratch (we went over its total synthesis in adv org chem one day, took an entire hour). However, from ergotamine it is comparatively easy, as the ergot fungus has already done most of the work for you.
Look at the picture of ergotamine on wikipedia, and compare it to the picture of LSD on wikipedia. You’ll find that the bottom half of ergotamine is an lysergic acyl group, attached to the rest of the molecule by an amide functionality (R-CO-NR2) to an iminal carbon. You can easily cleave this bond by treating ergotamine with mild acid and heat, to give you lysergic acid. Treating this with mild acid, heat, and diethylamine will give you lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), which you can extract into an organic solvent.
Of course, when I say this is easy i mean it is easy if you have a chem lab at your disposal. If you don’t, the most difficult reagent to procure would probably be diethylamine, which is the DEA watchlist for chemical precursors.
Q: Migraine: What is the cure? How do I get rid of it? Any specific medication or remedy?
I have been suffering from migraine since I was 13 years old. Back then, the migraine had been constant but did not last long and it was easy to cure with plain paracetamol.
Over the years, the migraine lessened but seem to last longer than it had been before and I have also grown immune to paracetamol thus, changed my medication to ponstan.
When ponstan stopped having effects on my migraine, a local pharmacist prescribed me with a different medication which later on lead me to the hospital because I was allergic to it.
Now, the migraine attacks are less frequent but very excrutiating everytime it strikes. My family doctor prescribed me with cafergot initially and it worked well until it too had stopped having effect on the migraine.
I have had enough with prescriptions and medications and was wondering if there is a way to get rid of it. For your info, my migraine is associated with symptoms like bleeding mucus, seeing stars and nasal pain.
For your information, whenever I take caffeine, the migraine worsen. Any other suggestions? I’m not quite keen with another medication since I’m worried there might not be any more effect on me after 2-3 months later.
A: I also had bad headaches…HAVE YOU HAD AN MRI? ARNOLD-CHIARI MALFORMATION ONLY SHOWS UP ON MRI- NOT CT. I was finally diagnosed when I was 25..had surgery, and never get the headaches like that anymore…by the way, my son-8- also has this.
Q: What if it is not a migrane?
Hello, about a week ago I started feeling lightheadedness then it turned into a pressure/pain in the right side of my head. A couple of days ago the pressure extended to my eye and part of my nose. It almost feels like someone is pressing my eye and nose. Doctors say it is just a migrane and that it is not threatening they gave me cafergot and it has not worked at all. I still feel dizzy and the pressure on my head. What should I do, I don’t have insurance.
A: Well that might be bad news. Im sorry to say, but it mght be a tumor. It would be good to catch it soon so i would advise rushing to the emergency room if you can afford it. Forget not having insurence. This is serious and you may have to borrow money from the bank or a relative. maybe you can have a fund-raiser. Tell people the cause and they can help!
Here is a web site I found, but I wouldnt waste time reading it, Id call somebody to rush me to the hospital for some X-rays!
Q: Headache and Narcotic Question?
I have suffered from cluster headaches for the past 5 years. I have been on Nortriptyline, Maxalt, Cafergot, Midrin, Zanaflex, Zoloft, Prozac, and OTC meds for the headaches. I have had MRI’s performed and my vision checked. I have a neurologist appt. scheduled for Friday. What are the chances that the doctor will prescribe me a narcotic? I am in unbelievable pain and cannot continue to function like this. I need help! I am a 24 year old female.
A: Narcotics are not the standard of treatment for any type of headache. Trying to find the right combination of medications can be a very painful process, but narcotics tend to make the headaches worse, so they are not typically prescribed, even by PM doctors. You should see one though that specializes in headaches. There are lots of medications and procedures that can be tried such as nerve blocks in the neck. I know how you feel. I have had migraine headaches since I was a kid and they got worse when I got older. It took quite a while to find the right combination of medications for me, but we did find them and my migraines are much better. But I did have to go see a PM doc that specialized in treating headaches. Most major cities even have headache centers where they only deal with cluster headaches, migraines, etc. Good luck.
Q: My migraine always attack either before or after my menstrual. Each attacks will cause me vomiting?
and sometimes with shivering hands, unable to sleep and concentrate. Have been taking “cafergot”, (hope the spelling is correct) at least for the past 15 years. Will there be any side effects? Is there any other medication, suppliment/diet or exercise that I can try?
A: I’m sorry you suffer migranes. Cafergot has been one of the favorite drugs for treating vascular migraines for decades now, and it does have some long term possible effects, but they are more likely if you are taking large dosages on a daily basis. There should be a drug insert with your prescription which tells you the whole list, and if you don’t have it, your pharmacist should be able to provide you with one.
Migraines can be managed using multiple strategies to help control their frequency and sometimes their strength. Medication is only one strategy, and your doctor should have gone over the other things you can do or try. Since yours seem to be hormonally triggered, I would think the doctor would have suggested birth control pills as a means of controlling at least some of the influence. Other things would be to look at the diet, as there are some foods which can and do trigger migraines.
The Cafergot you take is a compound of caffeine and egotimine. Ergotimine is a drug derived from a fungus which attacks rye grain in particular, and is a hallucinogenic in it’s pure form. In the middle ages, bread made from the contaminated grain used to cause miscarriages, psychotic behavior, and even death. The dangers of overdose with the ergotamine remain the same today- which is why you should not be taking it daily, or in high doses. Again, you should have gotten these warnings from your doctor and pharmacist. In the prescribed dosages it is safe, just don’t ever decide to take “just one more”, and don’t take it every day. When you do take it, you would definitely want any doctor treating you to know that you have, and how much. There are other drugs that you should not get while you are taking the Cafergot. The doctors will know which, and can avoid them, if they know you are taking cafergot.
I highly suggest you discuss methods of treating and controlling your migranes with your doctor before you try any kind of supplements or herbal treatments. Some of them are harmless, some would not be, especially in combination with the medications you are taking. It would also help if you do a web search for the various migraine support groups/information. As I said, there are lots of different things you could consider and try, if you would like to change your migraine pattern. I’m sorry there isn’t any better advice I can offer. My mother suffers from migraines as a result of a nerve disorder, and I have watched her suffer the same as you describe all my life. She has had to resort to injections of Demerol and had to be admitted to the hospital to manage the pain of some of her attacks. So I have a great deal of empathy for your suffering. There doesn’t seem to be any magic solutions or perfect treatments out there, but there are things you can try to find the one that will work best for you. Good luck with the search, I hope you find yours soon.
Q: Anyone ever heard of Ergotamine Tartrate Caffeine Tabs..?
My doctor put me on them for migraines but I’m not too sure if I trust the medication… He said it could also be called Cafergot… anyone know anything about it? Good or bad?
A: why don’t you get the cause of the problem corrected? consult an hio method chiropractor.
Q: can anyone tell me how they deal with multi cluster headaches on a daily basis for months straight?
imitrex, fioricet, cafergot, all DONT WORK!!!
ok i said these expensisve medications dont work so why be so dumb t say advil?? u dont think i tried that 1st. some of you people ridiculous!!
A: http://painmedicationrx.com/esgic-plus.php
.I use Esgic Plus for cluster headaches and Egic Plus works wonders! Esgic Plus is a pain reliever and a relaxant. Use this medicine to treat tension/cluster headaches. Cluster headaches are characterized by an intense one-sided pain centered by the eye or temple. The pain lasts for one to two hours on average and may recur several times in a day.
Cluster headaches have been known as histamine headaches, red migraines, and Horton’s disease, among others. The constant factor is the pain, which transcends by far the distress of the more common tension-type headache or even that of a migraine headache.
Cluster headaches afflict less than 0.5% of the population and predominantly affect men; approximately 80% of sufferers are male. Onset typically occurs in the late 20s, but there is no absolute age restriction. Approximately 80% of cluster headaches are classified as episodic; the remaining 20% are considered chronic. Both display the same symptoms. However, episodic cluster headaches occur during one- to five-month periods followed by six to 24-month attack-free, or remission, periods. There is no such reprieve for chronic cluster headache sufferers. Causes and symptoms
Biochemical, hormonal, and vascular changes induce cluster headaches, but why these changes occur remains unclear. Episodic cluster headaches seem to be linked to changes in day length, possibly signaling a connection to the so-called biological clock. Alcohol, tobacco, histamine, or stress can trigger cluster headaches. Decreased blood oxygen levels (hypoxemia) can also act as a trigger, particularly during the night when an individual is sleeping. Interestingly, the triggers do not cause cluster headaches during remission periods.
The primary cluster headache symptom is excruciating one-sided head pain centered behind an eye or near the temple. This pain may radiate outward from the initial focus and encompass the mouth and teeth. For this reason, some cluster headache sufferers may mistakenly attribute their pain to a dental problem. Secondary symptoms, occurring on the same side as the pain, include eye tearing, nasal congestion followed by a runny nose, pupil contraction, and facial drooping or flushing.
Q: anything i should do if i ve got migrained too often?
cafergot and migraine
A: yes, go and see a doctor
Q: Athiest, what do you think of this?
Why is this medication prescribed?
Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Alprazolam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
How should this medicine be used?
Alprazolam comes as a tablet and a concentrated solution (liquid) to take by mouth. It usually is taken two to four times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take alprazolam exactly as directed.
To take the concentrated liquid, use only the dropper that came with your prescription. Draw into the dropper the amount prescribed for one dose. Squeeze the dropper contents into a liquid or semi-solid food such as water, juice, soda, applesauce, or pudding. Stir the liquid or food gently for a few seconds. The concentrated liquid will blend completely with the food. Drink or eat the entire mixture immediately. Do not store for future use.
Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of alprazolam and gradually increase your dose, not more than once every 3 or 4 days.
Alprazolam can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose or take it more often or for a longer time than your doctor tells you to. Do not stop taking alprazolam without talking to your doctor. Suddenly stopping to take alprazolam may worsen your condition and cause withdrawal symptoms (anxiousness, sleeplessness, irritability, and seizures). Withdrawal symptoms may be worse if you take more than 4 mg of alprazolam every day. Your doctor will decrease your dose gradually.
Other uses for this medicine
Alprazolam also is used sometimes to treat depression, fear of open spaces (agoraphobia), and premenstrual syndrome. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.
This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking alprazolam,
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide (Librium, Librax), clonazepam (Klonopin), clorazepate (Tranxene), diazepam (Valium), estazolam (ProSom), flurazepam (Dalmane), halazepam (Paxipam), lorazepam (Ativan), oxazepam (Serax), prazepam (Centrax), quazepam (Doral), temazepam (Restoril), triazolam (Halcion), or any other medications.
tell your doctor if you are taking itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral). Your doctor willl probably tell you not to take alprazolam.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone); antidepressants (‘mood elevators’) such as desipramine (Norpramin), imipramine (Tofranil), and nefazodone (Serzone); antifungals such as fluconazole (Diflucan); antihistamines; cimetidine (Tagamet); clarithromycin (Biaxin); cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune); diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac); ergotamine (Cafatine, Cafergot, Wigraine, others); erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Erythrocin); isoniazid (INH, Nydrazid); medications for mental illness and seizures; nicardipine (Cardene); nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia); oral contraceptives (birth control pills); propoxyphene (Darvon); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); sedatives; sleeping pills; and tranquilizers. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had glaucoma; depression; or lung, kidney, or liver disease.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking alprazolam, call your doctor immediately.
talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medication if you are 65 years of age or older. Older adults should receive low doses of alprazolam because higher doses may not work better and may cause serious side effects.
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking alprazolam.
you should know that alprazolam may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
talk to your doctor about the safe use of alcohol while you are taking this medication. Alcohol can make the side effects of alprazolam worse.

Q: Could this be head cancer?
I am a kind of person who gets angry a lot & whenever i get angry my head starts aching horribly.
I tried pills called “Cafergot” & ur supposed to take maximum 10 in a week but maximum 6 in a day & “panadol”is really not effective even the extra & above all that am really scared to go to the Dr. & even if i did go could he reveal it if it was cancer from the first visit?
PS
I really know this is bad but last week my head was killing me so i don’t remember how many pills of “Cafergot” i took & it’s written that taking too much of these pills could cause heart attack. AM IN DESPERATE NEED FOR HELP.
Thx for ur time.
A: Not familiar with that med you are taking as I take other kinds for my migraines. Why do you assume that the headaches might be cancer? As to your question of can it be revealed in one visit if it is cancer or not? No, you need a CT or MRI (brain scan) for that. Would you believe and trust a doctor that told you that you had cancer in one office visit without doing any test? I sure wouldn’t.
So why don’t you stop torturing yourself and go see the doctor. Let them do their test to rule out any physical problems, and tell them that the pill you have been taking is not working. There are many others to try and I am sure there is something that will make you more comfortable while he figures out what is wrong. You may be worrying yourself for nothing.
Q: Days/Week long migraines?
My Mother gets some very severe migraines with the full spectrum of symptoms. The Aura, weakness, tiredness, blurred vision, becoming disphasic, aching neck, increased sensitivity to stimulus, nausea and of course the everpresent severe pain. This has occurred all her life and of course she’s tried many medical options so far including cafergot, imigran, ibuprofen, Co-codamol and a few others that I can’t recall right now.
I don’t hold out much hope that anyone here should happen to hold the secret to why these occur or more importantly how do stop them. What would be helpful though (short of a magical cure if anyone has any handy) would be any symptom alleviating methods that anyone knows of to at least treat the migraines whilst they hit. At the moment all that seems to help is drinking lots of tea and applying hot water bottles or heated rice-bags to different areas of the head depending upon where the migraine has struck. She’s suffering fairly badly by the sounds of things as I type this anyone know how to help?
A: Go to a good ‘natural food store’ or ‘herbal teas/medicines’ and ask for Valerian root tea. BEWARE: it smells like dirty socks and the store may ‘complain’ because to sell it to you will cause their store to stink. DON’T LISTEN. Take the root home, and place 1/4 cup of dried root into one quart of water. Start it boiling then turn down to simmer and let it ‘cook’ until you have one cup of water left. Sweeten with 1/4 cup of honey. This is called a ‘decoction’ and is very strong. Give your mom one tablespoon and have her lie down in a cool, dark room with NO noise to rest. Give her another tablespoon an hour for four hours IF she’s awake. If she’s asleep, let her sleep. I had to go to the hospital for shots of Demerol and Vistaril every two weeks or so when I had my migraines … and they got worse as I got older until I was three years into ‘perimenopause’ … then they STOPPED completely, although I still get the ‘triangle aura’ once in awhile and must rest in a dark room. Your mom should do well on Valerian root … and don’t listen to anyone who says that Feverfew ‘works better’ … feverfew is a good herb that takes fever down and also relieves minor pain, but Valerian root is the ONLY ‘natural relief’ I ever found for my migraines … and I have had some so bad that all I had to do was walk up to the counter at any hospital and the way I was leaning on the counter and the look on my face told them I was in extreme pain.
There are some new ‘cutting edge’ drugs for migraine out now, though, but your mother must go to a doctor who knows all of them and knows her well enough to be able to tell if they are ’safe’ for her … I can’t take them because I have ‘heart problems’ but if your mom doesn’t, perhaps she can. Good luck to both of you … I hope the Valerian root helps … it certainly helped me!
