Q: How much does a prescription of Axert cost?
My mom was given samples of Axert from her doctor and has taken her last pill, but she doesn’t have insurance so if she was to get a prescription how much would it be on average for a prescription of those? Thanks.

A: In short, a lot. A box of 6 : ~$135, 12: $230.

NeedyMeds is a great site that links to patient assistance programs. Here is a link to Axert:

http://www.needymeds.com/drug_list.taf?_function=name&name=Axert

Q: whats more expencieve topamax or axert?

A: Topamax without insurance is like $120.00 or $160.00 per prescription.

Q: My 14 year old son has TERRIBLE MIGRAINE headaches?
We live in Houston, TX and they started over the summer. He has seen a pediatric neurologist (had an MRI which was normal) and been on Imitrex, Axert, topamax and depakote but he still has these horrible break through headaches we cannot seem to control. Anyone having the same problems? Any suggestions? HELP!

A: I have been living with these for 15 years. Unfortunately, people don’t realize that migraines are crippling, among other things. I read the book, LIVING WELL WITH MIGRAINE DISEASE AND HEADACHES, by Teri Robert. Good book! There are no cures, but keep trying. I had no luck with these medications either. You can try GelStat which is a herbal remedy. (just google it). It’s not that expensive, It works some times. My deepest empathy for your son. Most of these drugs have such terrible side effects, and don’t work. Good luck to you and your son! God bless!

Q: Where can I get real 10mg Hydrocodone for $5 each or less?
I’ve had migraines for 22 years, Doctor prescribed Imitrex Inhalers, but with my new health plan at work, one prescription (takes care of 3 migraines) costs me $177. The Hydrocodone I only use for breakthrough pain or when the Imitrex just doesn’t work (took it too late, etc.) But with 3-4 migraines per month, the Imitrex is too expensive. I’ve tried all the other Migraines meds, Axert, Maxalt, Neurontin, etc., and none of them work on my migraines. Where can I get real hydrocodone? My docs are too afraid of the DEA to prescribe more than 20 every 4 months, and I need more than that since I can’t afford all the Imitrex I would need. If I had a passport, I would try and pick some up from pharmacies in Canada (it’s over the counter there), but as far away as I live, it would be too expensive to drive there anyway.
P.S. – I don’t use this daily, usually have to take 2-3 10 mg pills in 24 hour period 3-4 times per month. This is not an addiction, or I would be trying to take them every day I think. If you know a website that isn’t a scam, that has medical consultations, please let me know. Thanks!
What’s causing the pain (according to dr) is the vertebrate in my neck don’t align properly (result of car accident 22 years ago not treated in any way), they get out of place, pinch nerves and cause the migraine. To get the vertebrate back into place the muscles have to relax enough for them to slip back into place. The muscles won’t relax unless the pain stops. That’s why the other migraine medicines don’t work. Have no idea why the Imitrex does because technically it shouldn’t.
The doc said the only other option besides meds would be surgical fusion of the vertebrate, and I wouldn’t be able to turn my head anymore. I have 4 small children, and a normal life after that would not be possible nor fair to them.

A: DEFINITELY go to a pain management clinic. They are not “afraid” of the DEA, because they make you sign a contract stating very specific rules you will have to follow (random pill counts and urine tests, giving them the name and phone number of the pharmacy you use and only using one pharmacy, etc.) and they WILL dismiss you as a patient if you break the rules. BUT, they will genuinely help you, and not just with medications, they use other modalities in conjunction with the meds. They will treat you like a human being in pain, not a pill popper. Try this website: http://www.aapainmanage.org/info/Patients.php

The site has a search page that helps you find accreddited pain doctors/programs in your area. It’s MUCH better than just looking in the yellow pages. You will need to bring all your medical records with you, so get them from your doc. No doctor would listen to me about my pain, they told me it was all in my head, even after doing suregrery and finding a significant case of an extremely painful condition called Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, my doc made me feel like a drug addict because we had worked our way up to percocet for the pain, it was the only thing that worked and he knew it because we had gone through ALL the anti-inflammatories and non-narcotic meds, but my pain doc absolutely does not make me feel that way, he gives me medication that TRULY helps, a month’s worth at a time. Give it a try, theyw ill really help you… I’ve been pain-free for a year now, and my life is 180 degrees different. This time a year ago, I couldn’t even get out of bed because of the pain but now, I work, I play, and I have NO pain. My WORST days, my pain level is about a 1.

Q: I have a migraine and pregnant?
I took 4 Tylenol so far today and drank tea, my migraine started yesterday and I’m miserable! I’m trying not to take the Tylenol but I’m miserable.
I have a RX migraine medicine and I really want to take it, it’s called Axert and it’s a Pregnancy Category C, it’s tempting when I am feeling like this.
What else can I do, I need to get housework done and I can’t because of this throbbing headache.

A: Tylenol is the only thing they’ll let you take.
It really sucks but for me I was having them so bad I took an Excedrin and my son seems fine.
It’s really up to you if you want to listen to the doctors and stay off your prescription.
Pregnancy and migraines are the worst part of it all!!

Q: migraine sufferers!! help! what do you think of topamax for migraine prevention? ?
i have severe migraines and have been prescribed maxalt, axert, and relpax each with varying degrees of success — kind of like a hit or miss each time. was thinking of asking the doc about topamax, any suggestions?

A: I have mixed feeling about topamax. It will get rid of your migraines. I took 200mg for about two years and never had one migraine the whole time. I eventually had to stop it because I lost too much weight. If you take it, take a really good multivitamin and ask your doctor to monitor your key nutrient levels. It will sneak up on you that you are not eating enough.
The other main side effect I did not like is that it makes you dopey. Your thinking slows down, its hard to spell or follow a conversation. This is worst in the first month and it gets a lot better.
The tingling hands and feet can be almost painful in the beginning, but also disapears after a month.
Its a tough medicine to get used to, but if you stick it out, almost all the side effects go away.
Drink lots of water as topamax has been known to cause kidney stones.
Bottom line, take this as a last resort. It will get rid of your migraines.
The link will give you some of the side effects from real people.

Q: Does anyone have advice about migraines?
I’ve only just begun having migraine headaches, I started getting them when I was 16. At first they were pretty few and far between, but by the time I started my senior year of high school I was getting 3 or 4 a week. I’ve been seeing a neurologist since, he’s the top in his field, I have no known external triggers, (i.e. food, sunlight, smells etc) and so far nothing has worked for the pain. (I’ve been on Imitrex, zomig, axert, darvocet, vicodin, midrin, demerol, dilaudid, talwin, hydrocodone/Norco, fioricette with codeine and oxycodone hydrochloride to date.) I’m on a prophylactic (Norvasc) but lately I’ve been having many a week again. Does anyone know what I should do next??

A: My mother suffered with migrains until she started being treated for osteoperosis. Try upping your calcium intake. She was using some sort of inhaler to counteract the effects. Since she has had no migraines.

Q: I’ve had Migraines for 3 years and counting, know of anything that’ll really work?
I’ve had Anti-Depressants, Anti-Psychotics, Anti-Inflammatories, all the Triptans, Visteril, Toradol, Tramadol, Axert, Vikadin (which I can now take 5 of before I feel anything, than puke), Chiroprator visits, Muscle relaxers, EVERYTHING! I need a cure, it takes so much out of my life, and I’m only a Senior in highschool. Please, anyone know of anything?

Q: Headaches. What’s your cure?
I have migraines. They make me vomit, that “aura” of lights in my left eye, can’t stand noise/smells/light. Have tried the strong pain meds but doctors are so reluctant to prescribe them. I have a really bad one about once per 3 or 4 weeks. Regular meds for migraines such as Imitrex, Maxalt, Axert, Midrin, Frova, Depakote, Inderal, Darvon, Darvocet, etc will work for maybe 1/2 hour but then it’s back to this crushing pain. I’ve had MRI’s, CAT’s, tests ……….all of them but they find nothing wrong and say I just have a migraine problem.

One thing that does help is to stand in a very hot shower with the water spray over the left eye where the pain is located. It helps for about 20 minutes but obviously I can’t stand in the shower all day.

A: The most important thing is to stay hydrated, drink lots of water. I’ve found that I am migraine prone and try to avoid triggers such as msg (monosodium glutamate), nitrates, wine and chocolate.

MSG can be found in more than Chinese/Asian food. Look on the packages of processed food such as Hamburger/Tuna/Chicken Helper, chips and snacks. Nitrates can be found in hot dogs, bolongna and cold cuts, in addition to dried meat like beef jerky and sausages.

The shower is good. I like to take mine in the dark, but I have to lock the door or light a candle. Another trigger is sleeping too much or not enough. I always take medicine when I oversleep as a preventative. I’ve also discovered that listening to a certain song actually makes mine go away, it has to be played in a cool, dark room.

Q: Migraines or headaches?
I have been having severe headaches since the beginning of April. These headaches usually last all day with little or no breaks inbetween. I noticed that when I get them my pupils dilate. I went to my opthamologist and he said my optic nerves had little damage to them and they were probably cluster headaches. I then went to my PCP – he started me on Prednisone for 7 days but there was no relief. Since then he’s put me on Fioricet, Imitrex, Axert, Zomig, Tylenol #3, and Epidrin. None of these have given me any relief.

I went to a neurologist on Friday and he confirmed that they were not migraines. He said my symptoms were not typical of migraine behavior. Headaches last all day on my left side, no tearing or yellowing of eyes, no runny nose, but my hearing on the left sometimes goes out. He prescribed Naproxen and also ordered an MRI. He told me it could be something more serious.I have a lot of faith in this doctor as he has been voted one of the best in America since 1996
My question is: What could the more serious part be? Tumor, cancer, hemmorhage?
Also, do you think I’m doing everything possible or should I see another specialist?
I forgot to mention the current meds that I take: Atenolol (for SVT), Colestid, and Nexium. I thought Atenolol would help the migraines as well but it doesn’t. I’m also taking Compazine for nausea. Ever since these headaches started I have been naseaous and vomiting.

A: yes, honestly, i does sound like there is a possibility of any of those options. but also, it could be as simple as stress or sinus related as well. Don’t get too worried, but if it keeps bothering you keep getting it check out

Q: Migraine Question?
So I get migraines. I have been to the doctor several times. I have explained my symptoms. My hands and fingers go numb, the side of my face, my tounge even goes numb. I have been told that these are normal symptoms. Does anyone else have these symptoms? I got one yesterday and took an Axert. It seemed to have fight it but why would I be getting another one today. Can the pressure in the air cause this? ( barometric pressure)

A: “My hands and fingers go numb, the side of my face, my tounge even goes numb. I have been told that these are normal symptoms. Does anyone else have these symptoms?”

My migraines are not the same as yours, but your symptoms are not unusual and are no cause for alarm.

“I got one yesterday and took an Axert. It seemed to have fight it but why would I be getting another one today. “

It is very possible to get a migraine two or more days in a row. It can just happen naturally, or it can be a rebound headache from taking too much medicine. Generally, you should not take triptans (Axert, Zomig, Imitrex, Relpax, etc.) more than two days in a row or more than three times a week. If you do, you can develop a sort of dependence on the drug and start to have headaches from not taking it.

“Can the pressure in the air cause this? ( barometric pressure)”

Yes. This is one major trigger of migraines for me.

If you have a lot of problems with migraines, try visiting a headache specialist if you have not already.

Q: Migraine medicines? Med. students, doctors, nurses please…?
I have had migraines since I was 6. I am 20 now and I still have them, I have gone to a neurologist and I have yet to find a medicine that works. Just a few of the medicines I have tried: Imitrex, Topomax, Elavil, Beta-blockers…and a few others but I was young and don’t remember the names. My doctor wants me to try depakote now, but I read that it causes severe weight gain so I do not want to take it. I do not know what to do. My doctor acts like there are no other options. Why would none of these medicines work on my headaches? I do take Axert when I get a headache and it works amazingly! What exactly does Axert do and are there any preventive medicines that work like Axert?

A: There is one called Stadol (an opiate based nasal spray). Your Doctor may not want to suggest it because it is a narcotic. It is very effective — but addictive.

Sorry, I hope you feel better.

Here is a site that may help.

Q: Headache for a year straight and no answers?
I have had a headache for a year now, with a severe migraine on top of that about 4-7 times a week. No migraine medication works. Neither does Ativan, Naproxyn, Exel, Axert, Elavil and a few others I dont recall the name of. I have short term relief from Toradol sometimes, and Percocet if it doesn’t make me throw up and pass out. I have been leaving it untreated as taking Percocet everyday just isn’t doable. I had an MRI in November that was normal.

When it began, my entire body would tingle on and off in different spots for five months. I had never had a migraine or lots of headaches prior. Before the headache started I had an ectopic pregnancy and was given the drug Methotrexate.

I am pretty much going crazy as my head always, always hurts and I still have no answers. This is really taking a toll on me mentally and physically, any advice willl me much appreciated!
Also, after the methotrexate my headache was gone for two weeks.

A: Hey, not to sound off the wall, but my brother had terrible, terrible headaches that were debilitating to the point of him losing his job. This went on for about 8 years and then I got diagnosed with celiac. He does not have celiac, but he has a TON of food allergies. Once he went gluten, lactose, casein and corn free he felt MUCH better!
Has anyone done any allergy studies on you?
He is classified as a non-celiac gluten intolerant, with allergies to dairy and corn. It changed his life… he now has a job and a wife! Please consider this line of investigation, he had been through everything, CT Scans, MRI’s, meds that wiped him out for days, everything. All along it was food intolerances and allergies. Go figure!

Q: Is this a positive pregnancy test?
My boobs have been hurting for a few days, and my period was supposed to start yesterday. I took a test and have a faint , does this look positive to you? http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2827/010bh2.jpg

I have a migraine today, and I took a Axert because I’m miserable.
If, that is a positive what do I do next?? Should I tell my husband or wait to test again?
oh my god, im so nervous now after seeing these answers!!!!! im shaking

A: Congratulations mom! That’s exactly what mine looked like, I’m 9 weeks!
Why don’t you take another test if it will make you feel better (but you’re pregnant.) After my first test I took a digital that said PREGNANT. There’s something about seeing the words. Congratulations! :)

It’s totally your decision and will be special either way, but I waited until my hubby got home. I had two helium balloons, one blue that said IT’S A BOY! And one pink that said IT’S A GIRL! tied to a baby gift bag that contained the test, some booties, a book called dearest dad that had lots of daddy animal/baby animal pics in black and white. There’s lots of fun ways to tell your hubby. You may want to do a search on YA for creative ways to tell your hubby!

I’m SO HAPPY for you!!!!!

Q: Birth control and prednisone?
I recently changed from Yasmin to Yaz. Because I have bad allergies, I was put on prednisone. Well this week (two days before I started) I got an evil migraine here at work and it has lasted for 4 days. Can the steroid cause that with the birth control? Or is it maybe the birth control switch was it? I am miserable. I go to the GYNO doctor Tuesday and could use some help. I am taking migraine medication (Axert) daily just to keep them at bay. My head still feels really sore and sensitive and feels like it could erupt at any time. PLEASE HELP!
The last day for the prednisone was two days ago I dont know if that is the exact reason but it has got to be something. I am contemplating just getting off the birth control and getting a sponge or diaphram. It has got to be either the bc or the steroid.

A: OK, we have a complicated situation here.
1)First of all there’s the Prednisone. It’s a steroid anti-inflammatory. As such, it’s actually really difficult to get a migraine on it–the antiinflammatories are so powerful that the inflammation of migraine just doesn’t start. In fact, at my migraine clinic, they will often put people on a “steroid taper” to get them out of a bad cycle of constant or daily migraine. So I would think it’s NOT the Prednisone.
2) Switch from Yasmin to Yaz: The difference between the two pills is that Yaz gives you less estrogen than Yasmin (.02mg estradiol vs .03mg estradiol), and it has 3 more days of active pills than Yasmin, too. Progestin is the same (drospirenone). Migraines are highly affected by a woman’s cycle. Low estrogen in particular can give you migraines (I know because I went through this myself, but there are also a lot of studies). This is why a lot of women get migraines during the week they don’t take active pills, when they’re using oral contraceptives. So is the lower dose of the estrogen in the one pill affecting you? Possibly. It’s hard to say without some experimentation. But since it began, if I am understanding you correctly, two days before you started the Yaz for the first time, it seems highly unlikely. You would have been on your off week of Yasmin, I assume, when the migraine started? If so, then that’s perfect timing for a menstrally related migraine–you were at your lowest point of estrogen. So in other words, while it’s possible that the switch from Yasmin to Yaz could do this kind of thing, it’s pretty unlikely in this particular instance. Unless I misunderstood you, and you switched in the middle of a pack from Yasmin to Yaz. The sudden estrogen drop could cause a migraine.
3) Axert: you’re taking it daily. Bad bad bad bad!!! In my opinion, this is the likeliest reason why you’ve been getting daily migraines. You shouldn’t take Axert two days in a row. Same goes for other migraine treatments. The problem is that you will often get a “bounce-back” migraine if you take the meds too often, and you’ll get into this nighmarish cycle of daily migraines. I’ve been there, too. :-( Different neurologists will have different recommendations of how often you can take migraine meds, but I think in general, I wouldn’t take them more than two times per week.

My recommendation: go cold turkey off the Axert. I know it’s agony, but it’s the only way to do it, and while the BCP switch may or may not have cause the migraine, it’s the Axert that’s perpetuating it. Hopefully, the Prednisone will prevent too much of a reaction on the part of your body. Go back to Yasmin for another month or two, until you’re away from this cycle of pain. If that’s feasable–I don’t know what kind of problems you were having with Yasmin. But when I start having cycles of migraines, I retrench to familiar things for a little while. I don’t think your gyn will know much at all about migraines–it’s my experience that gyns know little about treating migraines, and neurologists know little about hormonal effects on migraines. Alas! Anyway, take care of yourself. I’m so sorry you have to go through this!
